The reality is that no matter how much OpenAI, Google, and the rest of the heavy hitters in Silicon Valley might want to continue the illusion that generative AI represents a transformative moment in the history of digital technology, the truth is that their fantasy is getting increasingly difficult to maintain. That’s in part because the chatbots are still making a ton of mistakes in the answers they give to users, including during Google’s I/O keynote. https://disconnect.blog/ai-hype-is-over-ai-exhaustion-is-setting-in/
AI hype is over. AI exhaustion is setting in.
Google and OpenAI’s latest showcases suggest the AI bubble’s days are numbered https://disconnect.blog/ai-hype-is-over-ai-exhaustion-is-setting-in/
Beyond the massively oversold new features that might not even need an LLM in the first place, the leaders of this AI push are getting lost in their own fantasies.
So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.
"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."
@mastodonmigration And Starlink isn't alone. The Chinese are building a similar system and there's at least one other Starlink competitor. What will the sky be like when there are 10s of thousands of these? And BTW, they will need to be completely replaced every few years and the idea they will "fall" from orbit cleanly is a fantasy promoted by Elon the Bad Musk.
Gods I love the modern #Internet.
Suddenly last week I started getting tons of emails from #Substack for some reason.
Thanks to the #Enshittification of the Internet apparently when a newsletter I once read moved to substack, Substack auto-creates an account for you and start pumping out newsletters. Without consent.
I had to log in, create a profile (thank Artemis only a name was required) and then move into account settings and delete the account.
“What we have seen perpetually with Tesla is the ethos of a tech company, wanting to push out product as quickly as possible, wrapped up in an automotive manufacturer, which should be far more intentional and thoughtful in producing vehicles.”
Hollywood liberals didn’t destroy the family farm, college professors didn’t move manufacturing jobs overseas, immigrants didn’t pour opioids into rural communities, and critical race theory didn’t close hundreds of rural hospitals. When Republican politicians and the conservative media tell rural whites to aim their anger at those targets, it’s so they won’t ask why the people they keep electing haven’t done anything to improve life in their communities. https://digbysblog.net/2024/04/12/rural-white-pity-party/
In South Carolina, one of the most corrupt and racist US states, it looks like someone's embezzlement scheme was uncovered. GQPers: Gee, we have no idea how this got here. They're even denying it's real money.
South Carolina mulls mystery $1.8bn in account: ‘We don’t know why it’s there’
Yep. Search is dead. soon everyone will have to pay for crappy and unreliable as AI spreads misinformation and lies.
I tried the new Google. Its answers are worse.
Google’s AI-‘supercharged’ Search Generative Experience, or SGE, sometimes makes up facts, misinterprets questions and picks low-quality sources — even after nearly 11 months of public testing.

MAMMA MIA! Actor Sara Poyzer Reveals BBC Voiceover Role Was Replaced With AI
Sara Poyzer, a stage and screen actor who is best known for performing in Mamma Mia! in the UK for many years, has taken to social media to share a story she's calling "sobering."
Social media platform is like phantom stocks. They appear substantial, but their value is elusive.
How Phantom Stock Works:
Phantom shares mimic real stock value.
Pump & Dump Scheme: A fraudulent practice where individuals artificially inflate the price of a stock (or in this case, social media company) to attract unsuspecting or criminal/dark money investors who “pump” stock prices, the inflated worth is illusory.
Money Laundering: Trump concealing the origins of illicitly obtained funds by passing them through a complex sequence of banking transfers or commercial transactions.
Truth Social is a failed social media platform, that will merge with a publicly traded SHELL company. Financial Performance: Since its 2021 launch, Truth Social generated sales of less than $5 million. However, Trump’s supporters rallied to boost shares in the shell company, Digital World Acquisition Corp. Its a money laundering scheme.
