No one really knows how many people die in the U.S. after encounters with police that didn’t involve a firearm.

The federal government is supposed to track these fatalities, but efforts have repeatedly failed.

A team of reporters led by The Associated Press set out to investigate and documented more than 1,000 deaths from 2012 through 2021.
