@davidaugust that’s interesting. DirecTV is in geosynchronous orbit, not LEO (and I know it was a joke), but there are both intelligence and Starlink satellites in LEO. Not sure which is the more likely Russian target.

@ethanz did, until he was reading the bill's text out loud to his college class. It insane to me how often women are not given pain management for gynecological procedures, because many many years ago a male doctor who's never had a vagina, cervix, or uterus decided that there weren't enough nerve endings up there to hurt significantly. I think it's time to put this fallacy to bed. It most definitely does hurt, and people who have literally no experience with female equipment don't get to decide this for me. Trust me docs, you don't want to taste your own medicine on this.

@tokensane @philip_cardella @lin11c @RealJournalism I think this is what the Reddit community did to GameStop. They noticed it was heavily shorted by the financial industry insiders, and they bought shares to drive up the price, finally selling and causing the industry insiders to lose a ton of money. Rich people get right pissed when regular dudes take their money. They’re used to ripping peasants off, not the other way around.

dashrb,
@dashrb@awscommunity.social avatar

@lin11c @tokensane @philip_cardella @RealJournalism this seems right (& scary) to me. It offers an easy way for supporters, domestic individuals, corporations, and foreign governments and their oligarchs, to launder money to him. There’s enough capital in the fascist countries to allow them to scratch each other’s backs.

They currently purchase real estate from each other, at huge markups.

@Runyan50 @tokensane @philip_cardella @lin11c @RealJournalism evidence is a long way from enforcement. I used to think that people/companies will try to avoid doing illegal things. If the propaganda works, & he gets elected, I think most/all of the legal actions against him will simply disappear.

The problem with Donald Trump's 16 week abortion ban is that it frequently falls before the time that pregnant women are screened for life threatening complications. The exceptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother are so vague that the #Texas courts disregard the latter altogether. And it is unlikely to satisfy his right, since 94% of abortions happen before 13 weeks. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/16/us/politics/trump-abortion-ban.html

dashrb,
@dashrb@awscommunity.social avatar

@RealJournalism yes! And remember that “life of the mother” is not the same as “health of the mother”. So the pregnant woman has a high probability of being scarred for life, losing her organs, or becoming permanently infertile? Sorry. Those things aren’t qualifying exemptions for her “life”.

These abortion bans are cruel and inhumane. And the exceptions are flimsy and only designed to affect public opinion; they are not intended to help the women involved.

Here are my thoughts about the decision to take the ball first in OT.

This came up when the Chiefs faced a fourth-and-1 on their own 34-yard line. If the Chiefs had started overtime with the ball and didn't have any sort of score established, Reid might consider punting deep in that situation and hoping his team can get the ball back on defense, knowing that a stuff would already leave the 49ers in field goal range for a title- winning kick. Instead, since Reid knew he needed a field goal, they went for it, converted and eventually scored a touchdown to win the game. As Shanahan noted in his postgame news conference, the value of getting the ball first is to get in position to have the third possession of overtime, where you can win with a field goal and without having to hand the ball back to your opponent. If you take the ball and start with a touchdown, you're putting your opponent in an incredibly difficult bind, given that they both have to score a touchdown to match you and come up with a stop on the next drive to get the ball back. (Indeed, I suspect teams that get the ball second and need a touchdown to tie will try to win the game by going for two after their score.) Shanahan's offense was able to produce only a field goal on the opening possession, but even then, a stop from the defense at any point would have won the game, while the Chiefs would have been incentivized to kick a field goal to extend the game if they faced a fourth down in kicking range.
On top of that, Shanahan's defense was likely exhausted after an 11-play drive from Kansas City at the end of regulation. Remember that the 49ers stopped the Chiefs on a three-and- out in the third quarter, but after being rushed back onto the field after the muffed punt, Wilks' defense immediately allowed a touchdown pass to Valdes-Scantling on the first play of the new possession. Whether you want to focus on the game theory side of the equation or the human element of chasing down Mahomes again after a short break, choosing to go with the offense first probably was the right call for Shanahan. Per Kalyn Kahler of The Athletic, several Chiefs players said they were going to start overtime on defense if they won the coin toss, so it doesn't sound like it would have played out differently if Kansas City had been the one making the decision.

@dashrb@awscommunity.social avatar

Exactly. Maybe some people think that computers, with enough analytics and if-then-else statements, can be the perfect team coach.

No. The coach can “read the team’s energy”, understand what they need at any given time, and motivate them to give their best performance.

IMHO, it’s silly, naive, and arrogant to second guess Coach Kyle in this situation.
