It’s a sad fact that a lot of online content lives and dies by Google’s algorithm. The only problem is, apart from a few vague pointers from Google every now and then, how exactly pages are ranked is actually sort of a mystery.

However, an explosive leak of thousands of pages of internal documents has now lifted the lid on how Search really works, and, as @theverge reports, it seems Google might not have been entirely truthful about it all along. Here’s more.

Notable that the UN has moved to Element (Matrix protocol) as the basis of its messaging.

I'd like to see tech journalists do some serious coverage of Matrix, which seems to be a genuine alternative to the centralized, rapacious tech giants that spy on their customers for a living.

Nobody seems to have noticed it but the Mastodon project have been granted funding by @NGIZero in the Entrust fund.

This is amazing, but the best part is that this funding is targeted at implementing… Quote Posts 🎉

This effort started several months ago and we already did some preliminary work, but this will be a big feature for our next 4.4 version. This funding will cover the ActivityPub work, as well as backend, web frontend and official mobile app implementation.

Here is what we've created:

Conversations: communicate directly with the people in the conversation, not have completely isolated conversations with your followers and their followers shouting at each other -- and neither audience seeing the responses of the others.

Permissions: If you haven't been given permission to speak, you aren't part of the conversation. If you have not been granted permission to view a photo or video, you won't see it.

Audience: Your choices go far beyond public and not public. Yes, we have groups. We also have circles. You can also just select a dozen people right now and have a conversation only with them.

Nomadic identity, amalgamated identities and single sign-on: Site and project/product boundaries don't exist. It's one big space and you are you - no matter what service or services you use.

Post limits, photo limits, poll limits: None.

Rich content: Use markdown, bbcode, or HTML. Any of them or all of them.

Rules: You make them.

Algorithms: You can install them if you want. You can remove them. You control them and can tweak them.

And much more.

We are the streams repository.

RSS is making something of a comeback (it never went away, though Google and Facebook did their best to kill it), in part because forward-looking publishers see the value.

The excellent @404mediaco news site explains "How We Built a Full Text RSS Feed" on the Ghost newsletter/blog software, and shared the process with all Ghost users. Kudos all around.

Release banner for Hubzilla 9.0
Hubzilla 9.0 is here and delivers many improvements under the hood and at the UI level. Two of the most asked features have been implemented: repeats a.k.a. boosts and adjustable theme colors at the channel and site level. Hubmins can also customize other components via the bootstrap sass variables.

Under the hood we implemented a short term object cash which will improve performance when fetching objects. The internal use of ActivityStreams1 has been deprecated in favor of ActivityStreams2. Object integrity proofs (EddsaSignatures) according to fep-8b32 have been implemented. Interesting for developers: CI and the test environment have been vastly improved.

Other notable changes are: refactored browser to browser encryption using the modern sodium crypto library and support for custom emojis with configurable emoji sets.

For a complete list of changes in Hubzilla 9.0 please refer to the changelog.

A big THANK YOU! to all contributors and everybody who supports Hubzilla and its development.

Breaking changes

  • The .htaccess file has been updated to fix an issue with recent Apache versions
  • Require sodium PHP extension
  • Require bcmath or gmp PHP extension
  • Require intl PHP extension
  • Versions < 9.0 will not be able to decrypt encrypted messages composed in version 9.0 in the UI
  • Poke and Mood apps removed
  • Removed smiley button addon
  • Removed smiley_pack addon
  • Removed emojione addon (use the emoji addon instead)
  • Removed fediwordle addon (use the fediquest addon instead)
  • Individual connection filters need manual intervention (e.g. replace http://activitystrea.ms/schema/1.0/share with Announce when filtering repeats)

Update

  1. Backup your data
  2. Make sure that the sodium PHP extension is installed and enabled
  3. Make sure that either the bcmath or gmp PHP extension is installed and enabled
  4. Make sure that the intl PHP extension is installed and enabled
  5. Execute util/udall

Install

Please refer to the install instructions.
