"The generative AI boom has eroded trust between creatives and Silicon Valley. [...] itโ€™s time for tech companies to stop screwing around for their own benefit, listen to the users who pay them, and act in a transparent way."

One of my less successful experiments (so far), @vibecheck, is an automated account that asks a simple question about how everyone's day's been going, every day.

Instead of using "AI" with a sentiment analysis algorithm, why not just ask people directly?

Not too late to get this one off the ground. Boosts and votes appreciated. For science!

"Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025, but the company is now taking the unusual step of reopening its beta program for Windows 10 to test new features and improvements."

Are they just going to start cramming more AI into it to see if they can force people to upgrade?

I know $12 USD is a lot of money for some people, so to celebrate 1000+ sales (!!!), I'm giving away 1000 PDF copies of How Git Works (honour system: only if $12 is a lot for you!)

Here's the link, enter code BUYONEGIVEONE at checkout to get a free copy https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

(it'll ask you for a billing address but you can enter a fake address if you'd prefer)

@b0rk@jvns.ca avatar

I was going to post โ€œthe 1000 free copies of How Git Works for folks who can't afford it have all been claimed, I'll release more when we sell 2000 copies"

But then I went to check this morning and we've already sold 2000 copies of the zine??? So I guess we're giving away another 1000 copies now. https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

Hereโ€™s what is happening: We are witnessing executives and managers make technology that sounds appealing to them.

Hereโ€™s the problem: Most people are not executives or managers. By nature of management, workers are trying to work.

This whole AI-clones-in-meetings subcategory exists because of this misunderstanding.

Let's just skip ahead to where everybody sends their AI clones to the meeting and then we dump the all the meeting notes in the trash https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/3/24168733/zoom-ceo-ai-clones-digital-twins-videoconferencing-decoder-interview

Newmy,

The best part of this interview is where Nilay tries three times to ask which meetings the CEO of Zoom would delegate to his AI clone and no coherent answer ever comes out.

Iโ€™m asking you which meetings do you look at and think you would hand off? "I started with the problem first, right? And last but not least, after the meeting is over, letโ€™s say Iโ€™m very busy and missed the meeting. I really donโ€™t understand what happened. Thatโ€™s one thing. Another thing for a very important meeting I missed, given Iโ€™m the CEO, theyโ€™re probably going to postpone the meeting. The reason why is I probably need to make a decision. Given that Iโ€™m not there, they cannot move forward, so they have to reschedule. You look at all those problems. Letโ€™s assume AI is there. AI can understand my entire calendar, understand the context. Say you and I have a meeting โ€” just one click, and within five seconds, AI has already scheduled a meeting. At the same time, every morning I wake up, an AI will tell me, โ€œEric, you have five meetings scheduled today. You do not need to join four of the five. You only need to join one. You can send a digital version of yourself.โ€ For the one meeting I join, after the meeting is over, I can get all the summary and send it to the people who couldnโ€™t make it. I can make a better decision. Again, I can leverage the AI as my assistant and give me all kinds of input, just more than myself. Thatโ€™s the vision."
Iโ€™m assuming when you looked at your calendar today and saw a Decoder session. You were going to come to that on your own. What would you have sent an AI avatar to instead?\ "I think an AI avatar is essentially just an AI version of myself, right?"

Hey fediverse, just a reminder that I made a few dozen automated accounts that post anything from locations of libraries and parks around the world, live views from NYC, the ISS, or under the sea, book dedications, emoji polls, and lots and lots more.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite Very good point!

I've definitely seen accounts I liked, but had to unfollow because of their posting frequency.

I've also seen bots that have two, if not more versions, that post at different rates.

I think it's fair to ask the bot's creator, some may just not realize that this could be an issue. (Happened to me once! I try to aim for 4-6 hours, but sometimes you just get too excited when you get a really good idea.)

Not going to link to the actual review because I donโ€™t care and will not care about the movie in question, but I find it interesting how quickly and thoroughly the meaning of โ€œAIโ€ in the public vocabulary as shifted from โ€œfuturistic automated intelligenceโ€ to โ€œbad and lazily madeโ€

Good news for folks who enjoy AI embarrassing itself with nonsensical answers!

"Well, according to an interview at The Verge with Google CEO Sundar Pichai published earlier this week, just before criticism of the outputs really took off, these "hallucinations" are an "inherent feature" of AI large language models (LLM), which is what drives AI Overviews, and this feature "is still an unsolved problem.""

Between this public admission of what many of us already knew, and this recent news (sorry, can't find an unpaywalled version: https://www.theinformation.com/articles/generative-ai-providers-quietly-tamp-down-expectations), I wonder if we can start to hope to see the hype slowly die down.

For those who arenโ€™t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: โ€œNote that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything youโ€™ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog, (edited )
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out speaking out works.

Microsoft are making significant changes to Recall, including making it specifically opt in, requiring Windows Hello face scanning to activate and use it, and actually encrypting the database.

There are obviously going to be devils in the details - potentially big ones.

Microsoft needs to commit to not trying to sneak users to enable it in the future, and it needs turning off by default in Group Policy and Intune for enterprise orgs.
