An interesting article on the time line of the universe.

The Universe passed through many epochs, from free quarks and gluons to stable protons and neutrons to neutral atoms to stars, galaxies, planets, and more. The precise time at which these various epochs occurred, including the (current) dark energy-dominated era, can be pinpointed with precision. Here’s how we know.

An interesting story. From the article:

"Nobody has hired Gigli, a 35-year-old freelance commercial photographer, to create “Girls in the Windows.” He’s working without an assignment because he wants to memorialize those buildings, which stand directly across the street from his home studio. What he doesn’t know is that the image will become one of the most collected photographs in the history of the medium."

Indirect evidence of ‘dark photons’ has been spotted in the shrapnel of thousands of particle-smashing experiments. This could provide a glimpse into the mysterious nature of dark matter — which seems to make up most of the mass of the universe but is almost impossible to observe.

So is this the end for MOND? A new study conducts a statistical analysis of data of wide binaries obtained from the Gaia telescope and found Newtonian dynamics is preferred at 19σ confidence.

Mort is a funny, heartwarming introduction to Death, one of the major Discworld characters. It starts off with Death deciding to take on an apprentice, Mort. Turns out, Death loves curry, has an adopted daughter, Ysabell, and gets REALLY UPSET and VERY ANGRY indeed when people harm or kill cats and kittens. And he rides a horse who is most adorably named Binky.

Researchers have demonstrated a general strategy to achieve the long-term stability of plastrons (known to be unstable underwater) on aerophilic surfaces for previously unattainable underwater applications by taking inspiration from diving bell spider, Argyroneta Aquatica, which spends most of its life underwater. This can open up a range of applications in biomedicine and other industries.

It is not obvious why selection should favor menopause or the continued survival of individuals that can no longer reproduce. The famous Grandmother Hypothesis had been used to explain the evolutionary significance of menopause. A new study conducted on the Ngogo chimpanzees community of wild chimpanzees in Uganda challenges this hypothesis.

Interesting. From the article:

"Chemistry’s image problem

By the age of six, many children already have negative feelings about the word “chemical”.

Ask the average person what a chemical is, and they’re likely to tell you it’s something bad. Products advertise themselves as “chemical-free” – an assertion that makes no scientific sense (since everything in the world is made of chemicals) but resonates with the consumer."

A live news broadcast on an Ecuadorian TV channel was interrupted by a group of masked men carrying guns, grenades, and dynamite. The broadcast continued for at least 15 minutes. At the root of the fragmented actions taken by lawmakers worldwide is a fundamental mismatch. AI systems are advancing so rapidly and unpredictably that lawmakers and regulators can’t keep pace. As a result, companies like Google, Meta, Microsoft have been left to police themselves as they race to create and profit from advanced A.I. systems. Even in Europe, perhaps the world’s most aggressive tech regulator, A.I. has befuddled policymakers.
