This is not a software glitch, it's the Y1C problem: old mainframes were so storage-constrained that they only allocated two decimal digits for passenger age, and adding another digit would mean rewriting software that in some cases has been in use and constantly patched since the late 1950s.

Well, this is a transcendent level of evil: Facebook bought a VPN company and deployed it, in part, to spy on its competitor's users.

https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/26/facebook-secret-project-snooped-snapchat-user-traffic/

It's a reminder that VPNs have their own risks, beyond technical ones if operated incompetently -- namely, that you have to trust the VPN company itself.

UPDATED to reflect which users were being spied on.

DanielEriksson,
@DanielEriksson@mstdn.science avatar

@dangillmor FB and their evil shit aside, it's baffling that people think they have more reason to trust a VPN company over their ISP.

Can solar and wind power Britain? An update of David MacKay’s numbers (from 2008): https://www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/can-solar-and-wind-power-britain

TLDR: in 2008 MacKay’s calculations suggested renewables wouldn't suffice. But in the past decade the price of PV cells has dropped 90% and wind turbines 70%, while public opposition has faded. New calculations suggest the UK could run mainly on renewables by 2050.

I am devastated by the news that Naomi Wu aka SexyCyborg has been silenced by the Chinese authorities.

She represents so many things that the world desperately needs: competence, confidence, ability to communicate, ability to cross cultures and languages, shattering of old stereotypes, a positive view of the future, and much more.

The repressive old guard should put itself away instead. In China and here because similar people are coming for the Naomis here, too.

I usually only read one book at a time, but I had a whackload of holds come in at once so I'm now jumping between a rather bizarre combination of 4 books right now:
-This is How you Lose the Time War (El-Motar/Gladstone)
-Outlander (Diana Gabaldon)
-The Ministry for the Future (Kim Stanley Robinson)
-Hope Matters (Elin Kelsey)

I had the first 2 "Murderbot Diaries" books (Martha Wells) also cycled in there but I devoured each of those (next ones are now in my library queue, really good!)

The night of April 30th is Walpurgis Night (Valborgsnatten). According to folklore, witches from all over Scandinavia would gather in Troms in Northern Norway on this night to celebrate sabbat with the Devil, drinking wine from skulls and engaging in orgies. Walpurgis Night is still celebrated with bonfires in some parts of Scandinavia.
