On that story about scientists leaving X and coming here. Please, please lean into the feature of hashtag following and tag your stuff. A lot of us would love to find you and hashtag discovery is the easiest way here.
Folks, an open call: I am #hiring TWO Principal Research #Scientists to join the Developer Success Lab!
One is a scientist with statistics/psychometrics focus (R is our ecosystem here), and one is an intervention science focus; both are fully remote roles working directly with me, our current Principal Scientist, and our brand-new Principal Dev Experience Engineer on our public-facing empirical research mission 🙌
Let's reach out to all our scientist (and non-scientist) friends and acquaintances and encourage them to join the Fediverse. If you still have an a/c on twitter, post some messages there with links to the Mastodon signup site. Let's welcome them here and provide some gentle hints on how to be productive here.
This is totally neat. A game to #teach how to better spot #FakeNews. I played — had fun and learned!
"#Scientists who worked with us on the development of this #game found that playing Bad News improves people’s ability to spot #manipulation techniques in #SocialMedia posts, increases their #confidence in spotting such techniques, and reduces their willingness to share manipulative content with #people in their #network."
Interesting article about scientists leaving Twitter.
"The most popular alternative social-media site that respondents mentioned opening accounts with was the free, open-source software platform Mastodon."
Nature survey among #scientists who were, or still are, users of #Twitter/X:
"More than half reported that they have reduced the time they spend on the platform in the past 6 months. Just under 7% have stopped using it altogether. Roughly 46% have joined other #SocialMedia platforms, such as Mastodon, #Bluesky, #Threads & #TikTok.
"The most popular alternative social-media site that respondents mentioned opening accounts with was #Mastodon."
Lingua Libre has just surpassed 900,000 recordings in 193 languages, thanks to 1,246 speakers!
Two years ago, we were at 500,000.
Many thanks and bravo to everyone who makes it possible to create a free audio library that feeds and illustrates @wiktionnaire, #Wikimedia projects in general, and helps #scientists and #LanguageLearners.
Large, round balls are thought to #protect land & cattle in Padlya village near Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh. The balls are named "Kakar Bhairav", the first meaning 'farm' & the second 'ruler'. There are about 256 of them.
Recently, #scientists discovered that the #sacred balls are really fossilised eggs belonging to a #dinosaur species of Titanosaurus.
More on #RishiSunak's prevarication about (re)joining the EU's #horizon research funding programme:
no surprise that the continued delay to conluding the deal (already mostly finalised) is leading #scientists & research staff to either decamp to new jobs in the EU or not apply to come to the UK to join research projects....
My guess is by now the damage is irreversible, become yet one more cost of #Brexit & the #Tories political myopia.
For #InternationalWomensDay my ongoing series of portraits of women in science through history. If you look for them, they’re there. I’m up to 56 now. Here’s to the day when a scientist’s sex is no longer remarkable in any field!
Thinking about how #mastodon is great for #academia / #scientists, because not only do science deniers have less reach on this site without their #BlueChecks, but we have servers dedicated to various scientific fields, moderated by members of that community. This gives them an easy way to talk to each other, as a small community, which simultaneously functions as a way for them to talk in public in front of all of us, so we can see what they're working on, and chime in.
That's what's great about #Fediverse: every group can find a space that's uniquely tailored to them, but still connected to the whole world.

🌍 Calling all #scientists#professors#PIs#teamleaders#PhDs#phD passionate about shaping the future of research! I am looking forward to form a scientific collective to initiate a more transparent way to do research, as we can work together to break barriers, share knowledge, and empower global scientific progress. 🧪🔬🚀
We will use a new platform #bonfire to lead this change!
Let's innovate 🌱🔍🤝 #ResearchForAll#openscience#opensource
A company in #Spain has a plan to torture a million #octopuses per year – by raising them in crowded tanks and then killing them by putting them in icy water, which causes a slow, stressful death.
The company knows octopuses are highly intelligent and feel pleasure, pain, joy and fear, but this is their way of turning a huge #profit. Now they’re being slammed by #scientists and the #media – and if enough of us add to the pressure right now we can stop them.
"The team found two #octopus nurseries affiliated with #hydrothermal springs during their first expedition in June. Six months later, scientists returned to the nurseries and confirmed they appear to be active year-round. They also observed several other new octopus species away from the hydrothermal springs."
If "we" (#politics, #business &, we are all "consumers") make a 'superior' effort to dial down greenhouse gas emissions as soon as is practical, the #science clearly shows that whatever those climate events are, they will be far more manageable for all concerned, compared to a business as usual dystopian future
