This is nice to see..

A student can't afford to pay the $8 per month for sync, so builds a alternative. Then posts to HN and says "I probably violate ToS, so will take down the repo if asked".

Then the Obsidian CEO replies. Explains they aren't VC-funded and the $8 bucks subscription keeps the light on. Applauds the work of the student, points to other open ways that content sync can be handled and gives advice "if you rename, there's no ToS problem". 👍

We make #Obsidian so that we can capture our own private thoughts and ideas. Independent audits help us ensure that our code and procedures meet the highest security standards. We will continue working with industry-leading security firms on more audits that provide comprehensive coverage and transparency towards this commitment.

Obsidian 1.5 is now available for early access!

This release includes a brand new editor for tables. Table rows and columns are now easier to create, edit, sort, reorder, copy and paste.

These new table features can also be accessed via context menu, command palette, and hotkeys. Tables are still saved to plain text Markdown.

#Obsidian 1.5 also includes dozens of improvements and bug fixes — full release notes:

If you're a student or faculty, there's a 40% discount for Sync — $29 per year instead of $48.

This isn't new but I am realizing that many students don't know about it. You can apply for it in your account settings.

I've seen the hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

https://karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-choices/

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

Oral history of #RapaNui (Easter Island 🗿) suggests at least one voyage to #SouthAmerica from the island during early years of its settlement - now analyses of #Obsidian blades with food traces seem to confirm this:

A Pattern Language is one of my favorite books, and this abridged hypertext version by zenodotus280 is incredibly fun to explore with
#obsidian

The book explores humanism in design patterns at every scale from the layout of cities down to how you should choose chairs

zendotus280 did the hard work of linking patterns to each other which makes it possible to easily traverse the text across many more dimensions than you can flipping pages

🚀 I'm happy and proud to launch Actions for Obsidian on iOS!

After several months of work, hundreds of hours of cumulative testing in TestFlight ✊🏼, a ton of customer feedback 🙏🏼, and several reviews by Apple  we're finally here ✨

I'd be delighted if you'd check out its ~40 #ShortcutsApp actions for #Obsidian and see if & how it might fit into your #PKM life on #iOS and #macOS.

And I'm already working on v1.2, so stay tuned!

I write a lot of notes in (@obsidian) where I mention fediverse handles in the @username@domain.tld format.
I always want to link it to their profile so I manually change it to @username@domain.tld (or whatever the form of url the software they are using is) I feel like there should be a simple way to solve this with an Obsidian plugin that resolves names or maybe some RegEx userscript macro would be easier? Anyone have a solution to my silly problem?

Obsidian is local, offline, and privacy-first, so we won't consider adding AI features until they can fit with the principles in our Manifesto.

In the meantime, there are dozens of awesome plugins that allow you to work with LLMs.

been pretty delighted with #obsidian lately, but just discovered the #annotation plugin (built on #hypothes.is) and am now quite thrilled with it

here's an example of how you might use the composability of templates in #obsidian 1.4.3 to speed up your workflow:

  1. Insert person template
  2. Insert coworker template

properties are automatically merged (e.g. the tags #people, #coworkers)

one person can be many things, an author, a podcast host, etc, so you can use this flow to add all the relevant metadata for a person

... I have don't have meetings, but you get the idea 🙃

I updated the #obsidian Web Clipper for properties in 1.4. It also now tries to be more clever about finding the author and published date of an article.
