Anarchist, physicist, transhumanist. Really into exploring the roots of things and expanding degrees of freedom. Incurable moralist. Floating metal sphere. “Radically uncool.”

CW: entire feed is political, I will mention the existence of things like cops and rapists without burying it beneath a CW, but will provide warnings for in-depth descriptions of violence, trauma, etc.

There's a kind of feeling that I had constantly reading continental philosophy influenced leftist political texts since I was a teenager where every single sentence is wrong, often in multiple ways. The background assumptions are wrong. The references are wrong. The object statements are wrong. The strategies of argumentation are wrong. The gap between our perspectives is so vast that litigation of the differences in just a paragraph would take years.

I endeavor to make them similarly mad.

What unifies a number of my haters in camps as diverse as tankies, pomos, neoreactionaries, and green anarchists is that they read an article of mine and experience the kind of stunning fractal "there's too much to argue with at too many layers, you can't even begin" vertigo that I had with their texts. It sucks, right? It's a unique kind of infuriating.

Well I deliberately crafted it to hand you the exact same repulsion you crank out without realizing. You're welcome.

In particular one of the most common moves they make is some variant of 'everyone knows' and so I've endeavored to respond with just the same kind of social cockiness, the exact same level of "this is a settled / obvious point such that it doesn't need more than oblique reference."

I want to be clear: it's FAIR when anyone does that. Not every argument starts with justifications of every assumption. But theirs are wrong and they should feel some measure of the annoyance that always gave me.

To be frank, it seems to me that campist examples among our ranks arise through:

  1. Individuals for whom anarchy is not a core motivating ideal, but a flavor beneath a more fervently held commitment (to communism, resistance to the US Empire, etc). Anarchism is conceptualized as a bundle of tools to pilfer, not a core identity.

  2. Having tankie friends and getting information on things filtered through what they share and echo.

  3. Trying to then reverse engineer justificatory frameworks.

This is how you get the absolute absurdities of "anarchists" denying that Russia has a genocidal project in Ukraine and being totally surprised when confronted with facts re such.

Then making the move "well nevertheless, the US is bad and nothing should eclipse that."

Folks who have otherwise vocalized valid critiques of eg state collaboration get immediately exposed as campists in such situations.

The genocidal campaigns in Palestine and Ukraine have returned certain retrograde instincts to prominence, both campist monofixation on the US empire AND the embrace of nationalism in struggles of resistance.

These are my thoughts on resisting both:

I've always felt the solution to agrippa's trilemma was obviously stochastic convergence (start at every conceivable foundation, iteratively cohere, prune), but now I'm at a loss to find someone talking about this in the literature.

What's the search term?

The 2016 reemergence of tankies standardized this kind of social engineering into a very methodical formalism. Now that it's jumped from seizing forums and meme pages to seizing github repos, we should expect to see it become as consistent a background as spam and phishing attempts.

LMAO HOLY SHIT WTF

Luis the grifter liberal who showed up in a pumpkin suit one day, invented his entire backstory pretending to know anything about antifa, brutally abused multiple partners, peace policed, talked with cops, platformed fash, and slept with a nazi, is on idavox saying black bloc is bad. Come on @idavox . This dude's a notorious clown.

During the brief interlude while I took a shower, the doggo snuck onto my bed, chewed up a pen and then deposited it back exactly where she'd picked it up between two books.

There are intellectually starved leftists in distant DSA chapters who have never even tasted real anarchist discourse in their whole lives.

For just $8 a month you can sponsor one and send them monthly packs of zines on youth liberation, relationship anarchy, permaculture, etc.

“Saying that quarks are constructed is wrong but at least it's subtle, saying that sex is socially constructed is – I mean you know you don't have to be a scientist to realize that that's wrong.”
--Alan Sokal

What a damning fucking quote in how he lays out the EXACT opposite of any radical realism worthy of a physicist. In fact, in its appeal to default human-scale seemings, it's basically no better than the antirealists who think we make atoms with our minds.

My chapters tearing apart Sokal and Chomsky are becoming straight fire.

I write fine normally, but intense burning righteous outrage really takes the spiciness up a notch.

rechelon,

@hateofparesh

There's not a lot of focus. I mention some retreats from antirealism by an anarchist postmodernist I can't remember rn and Sara Ahmed, and I throw a knife at a Mackenzie Wark quote even tho on everything else I quite like her.

The thing is that most of the folks I target like Aronowitz are ostensibly on the far-left and share a good many values with me. One of my goals is to peel back the differences in values, the implicit authoritarianism or liberalism driving the distinction.

Sokal wraps himself in being a leftist and folks like Rorty etc constantly sneer that their position is the only anti-authoritarian position, so it's necessary to return fire overwhelmingly.

rechelon,
@rechelon@mastodon.social avatar

Yeah, I mean I lightly touch on this in the section going over everything different people think is at stake, but also some arguments are just obviously bad. Like I define science as a cognitive strategy or approach at root, so that's not notruescottsmanning to reject seeing science primarily as a social institution, it's just having a different definition.

Freaking out upon seeing an online friend post a photo because there's sufficient background data that I was able to fully dox them in under a minute, then checking their social media and realizing they actually dox themselves regularly and don't care.

Jordan Peterson demonizes antifascists as “postmodern neo-marxism” and thus "totalitarian", but I want to emphasize that insofar as we are “totalitarian” in his sense that's a good thing and also it is precisely because we are NOT postmodernists and not marxists.

There is truth, and we as anarchists can grasp it and thus fight without regard for democracy, pluralism, or historical epoch.

There are these moments buried in the deep lore of how certain science warriors went TERF where I feel a profound sense of unease at how I could have likewise slipped down that path in my late teens had I not always known I was a friend of Dax. It's a bit similar to how I fear my freedom of information commitments could have slipped me into being anti-antifa. But maybe my compulsive need to read the enemy and examine arguments would have saved me.

Me, in college: this is fucking bullshit

Me, now: this is fucking bullshit and I know far far more about the deep lore of your own discursive community that gave rise to this bullshit than you or anyone you know
