Here is the Hard Truth about #automotive software.
If it…
Looks like this; and
Has apps like this; and
Has pop-up notifications like this; and
Has widgets like this; and
Has distracting color palettes like this; and
Has small font sizes like this; and
Entertains people like this…
it is unsafe.
Full stop.
I could care less what consumers want. Consumers cannot appreciate systems safety. Regulators and systems safety experts should be making the calls.
In Germany in 1888, 39-year-old Bertha Benz (her husband put the "Benz" in Mercedes) went on what is widely regarded as the world's first road trip when she took the family's Patent Motor Wagon to visit her mother 60 miles away. 12 hours later, after unclogging a blocked fuel line with her hat pin and fixing the car's ignition cable with her garter, she arrived. Here's Atlas Obscura's story — an extract from "Women Behind the Wheel" by Nancy A. Nichols — about Bertha, Hellé Nice (the Bugatti Queen), "First Lady of Drag Racing" Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney, and some of the other women who fought at every turn for the right to drive.
Did anybody else see this and think the logo on the door was a giant USB port for charging this electric car sold in the USA (but only DC) and in the EU where you might not even need a license if your county classifies it as a "quadracycle" instead....
Danish union joins strike action against Tesla by Swedish workers
The Danish union 3F Transport, responding to a request from IF Metall, is joining the action in a “sympathy strike” aimed at preventing dock workers and drivers from receiving and transporting Tesla cars going to Sweden.
For supporters of a #hydrogen#transport economy, its all looking a bit like the Betamax/VHS choice in the 1980s (for this of you old enough to recall the river video system);

#Tesla's #Autopilot product is not at all, "partially" or otherwise, capable of "self-driving".
The official term, if you need to use something, is a "partial automated driving system" and the control responsibilities of the human driver utilizing such a system are exactly the same as if they were driving a 1995 Dodge Neon.
A farewell to small cars, the industrial icons that put Europe on wheels.
Since the start of the century cars sold in the EU have gained over 200kg on average—a third of an original Fiat 500. They have grown taller, wider and longer while legally carrying no more passengers.
Why a continent with ever-smaller families is driving ever-bigger automobiles.
"We need to rebuild the #commons. When industries are polluting the atmosphere or the oceans, they are, in fact, #privatising the commons ("considering a #common good as their private trash"). When an industry receives millions in #public#subsidies then make a patent, that industry is privatising the common. When Google is putting the Linux kernel in a phone that cannot be modified easily, Google is privatising the common. Why do we need expensive electric cars? Because the #automotive industry has been on a century-long mission to kill public transport or the sole idea of going on foot, to destroy the commons.
