It seems, I've already asked it on Mastodon, but now I really need the answer, if it exists. Does anybody know if there is some kind of a #Braille standard for #Latin vowels with macrons? For more context: In some texts, especially for learners, long vowels in Latin are marked with a macron, i.e., a horizontal line above the vowel. Is there any convention about how to show them in Braille? Thanks! #Blind#Help
This mess appeared, unasked for, in the latest iteration of my preferred PDF reader, which is shortly to become my formerly-preferred PDF reader.
I can’t think of a technological innovation which has been forced to this extent on the user. Smart phones, social media, search engines: people adopted these because they had an obvious utiltity. In contrast, AI is constantly being shoved up our noses whether we want it or not, a solution to problems that don’t exist.
#Introduction I'm arfy, a long-time fan of #music#composition via #midi, as well as just enjoying music in all of its various forms. These days my compositions are few and far between, but the interest is definitely still there, especially now I have access to #apple#logic and Native instruments Komplete Kontrol and its system of #accessibility. I still love keeping up with the #electronic music scene and the technologies coming down the pipe. My other big interest at the moment is #History, and #language#etomology, particularly of #english and how it evolved from a mix of Germanic, #Latin, #Greek and all sorts of others. Also I'm an aspiring #ham#radio operator, wanting to get my #Australian foundation Licence. I think that's it for now, so, 73s!
The word lesson came to English from French leçon, which itself came from #Latin lection(em). The word originally meant reading, and is related to words like legible.
The word lecture ultimately goes back to the related Latin word lectura, which also meant reading.
Both words went through the same shift in meaning at different times: from a reading from a book in a school, to (academic) instruction in general.
One of my favorite things in #neuroanatomy is the number of structures with names like "nucleus ambiguus" (ambiguous nucleus), "substantia innominata" (unnamed stuff), and "zona incerta" (uncertain zone).
If I were making a neuroanatomical atlas in the 19th century, I definitely would have called something "locus draconum," as in the old navigational charts' "here be dragons".
Not sure if there are any Latin/Jazz music lovers out there; I'm plugging my good friend, former college roommate, and fellow musician, Jon Ball as he joins
