When technology becomes faster it can also steal time from moments of value.

Imagine a computer taking 90 seconds to start up in the morning. You press the on switch and during the wait you naturally take a moment to exchange pleasantries with your colleagues, ask them about their families, hobbies or more immediate concerns. They reciprocate with a smile.

Fast forward two years and the same computer takes 7 seconds to start. You have barely enough time to sit down and adjust your seat.

Now there’s no need to talk to your colleagues. No need to smile. Because technology has just saved you so much time. Almost 6 hours per year. Per employee

I guess someone somewhere is smiling.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, composers like Antonio Vivaldi and Nicola Popora taught music to orphaned girls at Venice's four Ospedali Grandi. For @TheConversationUS, musicologist Marica S. Tacconi tells the story of how, on a visit to one of the smaller Ospedali, she and singer Liesl Odenweller found, painted in a fresco, a page of sheet music, which will be performed in a concert this December.

    The European commission tweeted saying: "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority."

    Same exact sentence from the stupid 22 word letter from the #TESCREAL orgs, this one being the Center for AI Safety. The same one whose founder, who just graduated I believe, wrote a "paper" with the title "Natural Selection Favors Artificial Intelligence."

    Surreal seeing this play out.
