A Facebook friend of mine posted a near treatise on how inequality exists and needs collective action to overcome it, and gosh, isn't it a shame that there's no philosophy, ethics, or principles that might help us with this. I responded suggesting that he read literally any anarchist or, hell, even Marxist theory; to which he responded that those systems wouldn't work.

I swear, liberals will be the death of all of us.

wild how like. the government is completely unwilling to legalize cannabis federally. but its also completely unwilling to make cannabis any more illegal then it already is, so they’re not outlawing newly-isolated cannabinoids. so we’ve reached a point where weed is legal by default since legal stalemate means you can just get delta 8 + delta 9 HHC oils and combine them for the same effect

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@killeveryhetero @dangerdyke And then there's THCa flower which appears to just be normal weed? It's bizarre, but I'm not complaining.

Do you remember how right-wingers used to complain about rap all the time? Have you noticed that a lot of them have embraced rap?

Right-wingers end up embracing the cultural threads that they originally oppose because they're largely incapable of producong their own cultural threads and they need to co-opt the art and culture of others. They are doomed to forever pillage the works and movements of people they hate because right-wing ideology stunts every creative impulse.

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@PallasRiot I like this take, but I'm not sure it's wholly generalizable. Modernist poetry produced some legitimately great work imo (I love The Waste Land), but many of people behind it were very conservative, with some, like Pound, being outright fascists. It's entirely possible that this is the exception that proves the rule, though, especially since they weren't formally conservative in the way that the people who, say, criticize rap for not being music were.

On the one hand, it would be nice if people claiming to care about the genocide in Gaza would stop wringing their hands about the use of "From the river to the sea." On the other hand, said hand-wringing does conveniently reveal where they really stand, so six-of-one, I guess.

not much, just realizing that one of the things i find frustrating about gender discourse is that "man" and "woman" are nouns, whereas "nonbinary" is an adjective. How about you?

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@ruthan People do regularly use enby as a noun, but it's kinda awkward and I know some people who find that spelling infantilizing.

References to purity when discussing voting (as in, "leftists need to stop their purity seeking and vote Biden") just read as genocide denial and apologia to me at this point. Perhaps you think that it is strategically necessary to hold your nose and vote for Biden. But saying that people who don't agree with you on the strategic necessity of voting for a genocide enabler are seeking purity is such an obvious distortion of reality that a person might start to wonder if you actually are holding your nose. Maybe he smells just fine to you.

People are complicated, but I don't think a person can understand and feel even a portion of the impact of Biden's continued material support for Israel and say that people who won't vote for him are seeking purity. Purity. The word choice itself is cruel. In my opinion, personally.

@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@ErisCaffee @claude_cahun As a bisexual trans woman, comparing what's happening to us in the US to what's happening in Palestine right now is incredibly fucked. Show some self-awareness.

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@ErisCaffee @claude_cahun I mean, I'm actually going to vote for Biden, as much as I'm not going to like it, and I've been doing as much as I can to help fight the anti trans bullshit being pushed in my state. Scolding people because they're disgusted by the actions of the current administration (which include doing sweet fuck-all for trans folks) just papers over the existing failures of Democrats, which are innumerable at this point.

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@claude_cahun In fairness, I do think society has done a really effective job of conditioning people into believing that the only way they can take action or effect change is to vote and, maybe, if you're really enthusiastic, volunteer for a campaign. That's obviously wrong, but my road to learning otherwise was a long one. I remember talking with my mom a couple years ago about an election with the prospect of something horrible happening and she was like "All we can do is hope," and I was like "Well, actually..."

That doesn't make it any less frustrating or infuriating, mind you, but one of the big political organizing tasks is convincing people that they have power if they want it and giving them a convenient path into learning how to use that power. A lot of the K-Hive and other vote scolds are too far gone, admittedly, but I think there's a population that can be reached if we can figure out how.

Hey, I just put out a new Nightshade Forests EP: three tracks of old school, slightly chiptunes inflected #DungeonSynth ranging from somber melancholy to wistful nostalgia to anxious pursuit. I'm really happy with how it turned out, and I hope you give it a listen and enjoy!

Recorded entirely on the #DirtywaveM8, using wavsynth patches made from scratch. Message me if you want a download code.

One out of every 200 people in Gaza have been killed by the Israeli army — and the bombing still hasn’t stopped.

Let that sink in for a moment, then remember how Israeli authorities are trying to make Western publics believe they aren’t targeting civilians. This is a massacre.

I always side-eye any attempt to change rules or language in a way that impacts a disadvantaged group before an advantaged group.

For instance, we can talk about abolishing copyright or reforming copyright law, but if the first toe in the door is something that impacts small creators but not Disney then I have to wonder.

Or if someone criticizes "bisexual" for its "binary gender language" (which has not been true in meaning since well before 1990), but not "heterosexual" and "homosexual."

dragora,
@dragora@kolektiva.social avatar

@hrefna I get where you're coming from, and this is generally where the concept of non-reformist reforms is useful. That said, I'm increasingly skeptical of the ability of incremental reforms to achieve anything other than short-term harm reduction; the rise of fascist parties across Europe and the US is really showing the weakness of social democracy to achieve durable gains.

Additionally, reading Hammer and Hoe really highlighted how much the New Deal was used to disarm more radical activists while at the same time reifying segregation and leaving a lot of workers immiserated (there's a reason why people wanted to strike against the WPA). None of this is to say that it didn't make a meaningful difference in many people's lives, but it definitely people behind and can be read as having successfully closed the window on revolutionary change in the US.

I'm not trying to make definitive claims on this; I'm genuinely at a personal impasse on what constitutes an effective way forward as far as everything.

But yeah, back to the original point, Biden letting trans people back into the military was a meager victory for us at best, and gay marriage, while providing material benefit for a lot of people, did ultimately re-legitimize the institution of marriage and the idea that queer people are just like the cishets. Whether that'll matter in the long term, I don't honestly know.
