@cstross I’ve noticed Apple using AI for exactly one thing so far, and it’s actually useful: when Siri reads my text messages in the car, she’ll describe the contents of a photo someone has sent via SMS instead of just saying they “sent a photo.” If that’s as far as it ever goes, I’d be ecstatic.

These two that came with are the best fidget toys EVER. Solid and sturdy little guys. I wish all the Siege and Earthrise Micromasters were this durable, but I don’t doubt it was a budgetary restriction that HasLab didn’t have to worry about.

@wheeljack @TheLocalBard I got both Classics Sideswipe and Sunstreaker in a lot last year. They’re a bit fiddly to transform, but fun, and the way they reuse the mold is clever.

I always wanted the convention-exclusive Punch/Counterpunch toy they made from that mold, but it’s a wee bit expensive, and I have the PotP version anyway.

Pipo and Boater! Already love these tiny guys. Something about them definitely feels like they had a higher budget than the mass-market , but that may just be the new molds talking.

Edit: On further thought, it might be the fact that they skipped the "combine into a handheld weapon" function that the other Siege Micromasters all had.

@box464 Hasbro no longer uses “transform” as a verb because doing so would dilute their copyright to the term “Transformers”, or something like that. So they use “convert” instead.

As I understand it, though, you can still use the command “transform” yourself on this toy and it will change modes (or else it’s easy to add).

I’m annoyed that PC Gamer says Doom is the “spiritual” start of PC gaming. No, it isn’t.

I don’t deny Doom’s impact, or that it’s become the “mascot” of PC gaming—much like Super Mario has become the “mascot” for console gaming. But to say it’s the “start” of PC gaming, even if spiritually? No, not at all.

Look, Doom itself had a spiritual ancestor: Catacomb 3-D released three years prior.

But PC gaming is not about first person shooters. Other games have been just as impactful as Doom: Zork, Rogue, Castle Wolfenstein, King’s Quest, Wasteland, Civilization, SimCity, Wing Commander—all games released before Doom.

This narrative of Doom being the “start” of PC gaming needs to stop.

@atomicpoet I think what they mean is that Doom may have been the first game that made people want to buy a PC specifically for gaming, or want to upgrade their PC for same. Nobody went out and bought new hardware so they could play Sim City or Lemmings, or even Wolfenstein 3-D.

@GottaLaff There are enough tools on Mastodon to filter out posts about Trump, Republicans, Biden, etc. that CW’ing those topics should be seen as a courtesy, not a requirement.
