Apropos of nothing: scrolling through the entire federated timeline on #Mastodon is a LOT more rewarding when you’re on an instance that actively blocks spam, scams and hate before you see it.

This is the article that basically describes how I feel about using the Fediverse lately.
Data deletion is Very Hard to achieve on the Fediverse.
Example: I have a remote account, I federated / pulled some of its posts to this instance, I set that account to auto-delete some old posts, and I find out it doesn't delete those posts on this instance (even if I followed the remote account). I don't know if this is a software issue or what, but it means I can do nothing about this short of asking the admins of this instance to suspend and unsuspend my remote account to hopefully delete the local cache of posts. However, that would remove All the posts instead of only the posts I want removed, since I do not know if remote posts can be selectively deleted. I would also not want to go out of my way to point out which posts I want deleted anyway.
All of this to say, it is true. Once you federate something, you can't take it back.
In some fortunate cases, the spread might be smaller, but when it is possible for Google to index federated public posts from a server on allowlist that has federated to another server capable of publically displaying remote posts, it makes allowlist not as useful.
I really wish I could survive on games and non-social media. That way I won't be seeking out the Fediverse while bored and federate something potentially regrettable.

@suzed This doesn’t feel much different from other servers/search engines indexing your public posts; you’re always subject to their policies and whims when you ask them to delete your content.

Auto-deleting your old posts on Mastodon has always been a courtesy and not a security guarantee. I wouldn’t call it a “privacy nightmare”.

Seems pretty clear the crypto #spam that a ton of people just received in the last hour is coming from a large cache of premade accounts (all on mastodon.social) for the express purpose of all sending the scam out at the same time, knowing that the accounts would get reported/blocked, but hoping to clog up the moderation so that more people will see the spam while it gets sorted.
