Sometimes, those pause-screen ads in streaming services just line up perfectly.

splott, to DoctorWho
@splott@retro.pizza avatar

Poor Clara. she traded her cute, sweet, funny, playful Doctor for one that was grumpy, cranky, cynical and never smiled. and who initially didn’t know how to fly the tardis or who she was. and somehow that one episode, it was somehow painted some sort of failing of hers. 🤦‍♀️

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@splott I think Vastra was trying to say to Clara that, no, this is the same Doctor — you’re just seeing who he really is instead of who he wants you to see, and it’s on you to accept that. Which, I admit, I can relate to just a bit.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@splott Opinions differ, of course. I found Peter Capaldi to be the most personally relatable Doctor yet for precisely the same reasons you dislike him.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@splott Capaldi does remind one of the Third and Sixth Doctors, though.

Edit: and the War Doctor, as much as we know about him anyway.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@splott Hartnell was always portrayed as a warm grandfather. Pertwee was… well, the wiki calls him “authoritative,” which sounds fairly accurate, and Colin Baker was definitely arrogant.

If I had to describe Capaldi’s Doctor in one word, it would be “cranky”, but my second word would probably be “tired”.

I’ve been streaming the tv series “ER” from the beginning lately, and the more I think about Peter Benton as a character the more I think he was probably an undiagnosed #autistic.

He’s hyper-focused on his chosen subject; he expects everyone else to be as focused as he is; he‘ll often talk to people while walking away from them; and he has very little instinct for office politics and personal relationships.

My partner thinks he’s just arrogant, but they sometimes think the same about me, too.

Anyone in favor of mandatory interoperability for social media platforms? Sounds need but I have trouble imagining it in practice.

@ZachWeinersmith Dude, the Fediverse IS that in practice.

Here’s a short poem entitled ‘Name Calling’.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

Since no one else has posted it:

  • Beauchamp is pronounced “Beecham”.

  • Cholmondeley is pronounced “Chumley”.

I’d roll my eyes at the Brits for these pronunciations, but as a native Illinoisan I’d be a hypocrite. Our predominantly German population over a century ago ensured that the town of Versailles is pronounced “Vair-sails”, Vienna is “Vy-enna”, and Cairo is “Kay-ro”.

CactuarJoe, to random
@CactuarJoe@retro.pizza avatar

I still say fandom crossover events are only useful when the writers involved really understand the themes of BOTH properties.

Like, Star Wars vs Star Trek stuff is always about Turbolaser megatonnage vs. Phaser power output and that's boring. The story should be about what happens when a pluralistic society who's used to negotiating with their enemies encounters a nakedly fascist one that thinks sending a planet destroyer is an opening move.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@CactuarJoe Transformers+Star Wars would be a natural fit, though. Rebellion vs tyrrany in both universes, the Force gives the Jedi/Sith a genuine edge over Cybertronians, and of course there’s the whole Unicron vs the Death Star question.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@CactuarJoe @DrakkenZero I don’t think we’ve ever gotten a definitive answer to “Can Cybertronians wield the Force?” and I think it’s high time we had one.

(Opinion: Yes, they can, because a living spark is what makes Cybertronians distinct from droids, midichlorians be damned.)

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@CactuarJoe @DrakkenZero Lightsaber Battlemasters are going to be the BEST PART of this crossover, mark my words.

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@DrakkenZero @wheeljack @CactuarJoe Hot Rod as the Force user. He was created as basically a Luke Skywalker knockoff anyway.

I spent all this last week at work fixing bugs in someone else’s code.

And by “code”, I mean low-code scripts created using a user-friendly “clicks-not-code” solution that was designed to cut down on the time required to customize software.

Turns out that even low-code solutions still require a WHOLE LOT of variable checking, edge-case testing, and optimization before we move it into production.

Anyway, this is what I think of whenever someone says that AI will eliminate professional coders.

I am a big fan of both #transformers (especially females) and #corvids (especially ravens) so I've been whining about wanting Filch for years and look at her, she looks so good

@trixter I continue to be overjoyed at how these convention exclusive characters, who used to be highly limited and priced at something like $100 apiece, are now being made available by Hasbro at prices only slightly higher than the original molds.

“I know my code backwards and forwards” — listen, I just had to school you in front of the dev team on how to use “Find All” to search your codebase, maybe you shouldn’t be too cocky right now.

Cat_LeFey, to paganism
@Cat_LeFey@pagan.plus avatar

One major difference between paganism and other major world religions is that we don't believe life is a punishment. We are not born sinful and in need of forgiveness; to live is not to suffer.

Life is a gift, and the opportunity to learn and evolve is a blessing. To be a pagan, you don't have to be anything other than the wonderful, complex animal you are.

#Paganism

mighty_orbot,
@mighty_orbot@retro.pizza avatar

@Cat_LeFey do pagans believe people have an immortal soul? Serious question.

Stopped at McDonald’s late last night and could not figure out what was up with the “#WcDonalds” branding next to their new nugget sauce. Turns out it’s an #anime reference to the mangled corporate logos used in shows like #CowboyBebop over the years.

(Apologies if this is old news, but I’m an old person.)
