While touring #Andalusia in #Spain, I spotted a gleaming tower. Intrigued, I looked it up and found out it was the #Gemasolar Thermosolar Plant which can supply power to 27,500 homes and uses molten salt heat storage technology to keep generating power when there's no sun. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemasolar_Thermosolar_Plant - Perhaps #Italy could do with a few similar plants. #energy

@alexproe It would be interesting to see how IT & ES compare for installed solar power from residential / rooftop. Spain's right wing government had a cosy arrangement with their future employers in the electricity business that, effectively, made it illegal to install solar at home (illegal or you had to set up to install a meter to pay a tax making it pointless). They repealed the law in 2018, but people are still a bit nervous that a future right wing govt might restore it.

marcusjenkins,
@marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@alexproe There is this which isn't giving the installed rooftop solar stats per se, I think, but certainly makes a nice comparison on how good each country is with respect to its encouragement & support for people to install solar panels on their rooftops.

Italy wins over Spain!

@arstechnica I don't know about US, but in EU we're more worried about apocalyptic climate change that is accelerated by people continuing to burn stuff (including, but not limited to, in internal combustion engine cars) than a few car manufacturers having a hard time because they doggedly stuck to designing and making more shitty petrol, diesel & hybrid cars.

I'm sure I'm not the only person in the world who has solar panels on their roofs who has wasted quite some time in the mornings watching the magic of the power coming on.

This smugness is matched by looking back at a bell curve graph of production for the day where you've used up almost everything that the panels have produced and yet drawn almost nothing from the grid.

What's not mentioned here is steel-reinforced concrete structures' lifespan - 100 years is an optimistic limit even for a quality construction. So all this shit will need to be torn down and rebuilt within 100 years. That's assuming that all these buildings in China are being made to top-notch standards which, from what I've seen on the Interwebs, is definitely not the case.

And then there's tourism - environmentally conscious tourists will (quite rightly) eschew flying to Spain on a whim and filling private swimming pools is (quite rightly) being restricted this year.

    @arstechnica The whole selling point of the TWELVE THOUSAND dollar "FULL self-driving" option is that the car is fully self-driving.

    You should be able play on your phone while the Tesla is in FSD mode otherwise I would suggest that you are being conned out of $12,000.

    Thereโ€™s a bit in the news here in Spain recently about the governmentโ€™s forthcoming legislation on . The backlash from the right wing is predictable - scaremongering that weโ€™ll be forced to become sweaty cyclists overnight. The new law makes all the right noises in the context of the city - eliminate private cars, more public transport, walking & cycling. It fails to cover the tricky problem of rural & mountainous communities - too difficult / costly / unprofitable.

    marcusjenkins,
    @marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

    I did find a European project from over 10 years ago, Move On Green. The output of this project is the typical geography studentโ€™s bread and butter - presentation of statistics, demographics, thematic maps and, frankly, hot air. The conclusion, to paraphrase, is the problem is that people in the countryside have private vehicles because itโ€™s too far / hilly to walk / cycle & itโ€™s unprofitable to provide public transport with wide & frequent service. Well done.

    marcusjenkins,
    @marcusjenkins@mastodon.social avatar

    From my own experience of living in a rural, mountainous area - I have zero public transport to my village. The nearest bus stop is 5km away (with hills) for 4 buses per day weekdays, 2 on weekends, going just one route - 30km into the nearest city (over the mountain). EU has,basically, mandated privatisation of public transport & all-but-prohibits public subsidy. So, car (EV) to get around but will need park & ride for in-city destinations.

    @inquiline In Europe Ryanair is everywhere. Being the tight-fisted outfit they are, they snapped up a load of 737 Max just after the second MCAS crash when Boeing could hardly give the crappy planes away. Ryanair is keen not to call these shonky aircraft "737 Max", rather "737-8", lest customers might be put off travelling in their deathtraps.
