I'm so old I remember when Google said their mission was to organize the world's information.

Google search over the years:

1998-2016: Decent quality web search.

2016-2024: Mediocre web search dominated by SEO garbage and sponsored links.

2024-___: Whatever this is.

@jtlg @luis_in_brief oh yeah, that did the rounds. I'm always pretty skeptical of narratives like that -- fwiw, feel like bigger institutional factors tend to dominate over hero/villain stories.

Plus I kinda suspect that a big part of the decline is just some version of the second law of thermodynamics ... perhaps the story could just as easily be told in the form: isn't it amazing Google held back the dam as long as it did.

It's just stunning to me how quickly these features are being rolled out.

I have found it very hard to explain to non-SFans that (1) Waymos are really, really common here and (2) I’ve never once seen them violate a traffic law, whereas I can’t leave my house without seeing human drivers speed, run stop signs, make illegal turns, etc.

@luis_in_brief as someone with a healthy dose of skepticism of tech hype I confess that riding in a Waymo is pretty amazing.

I wrote a fairly mundane post on Reddit that led to me getting an AI-prompted message with suicide prevention resources.

I was completely mystified but then I realized it was probably because I included the phrase: "I find it hard to manage" (in a context like "I find it hard to manage the crabgrass in my garden ... ").

This is the future isn't it? AI pestering us with context-free misunderstood nonsense. I guess I should just count myself lucky that the AI didn't institutionalize me.

The FTC should go after health care providers, on fraudulent advertising grounds, whose websites say they offer urgent care but don’t. It’s maddeningly frustrating to need medical care, look at google results, and then do dial after dial just to hear that “oh, yeah, we’ll get back to you Monday”.

danielnazer,
@danielnazer@mastodon.social avatar

@luis_in_brief the US in general is terrible for any health care that falls between being rolled into the ER with five bullet holes and, whatever, sure, it can wait a month.

    Every time I see "Liquid Death" water I feel personally insulted.

    I read every can to say "Yes, you humans, especially male humans, really are stupid enough that, even though drinkable water comes out of the faucet, we can sell a ton of expensive water in a can just by giving it an idiotic name."

    I can't comment on the factors that led folks to make this choice but holy crap does it suck to see Open Collective dissolving.

    I imagine many projects, perhaps hundreds, will struggle to navigate this and end up in a really awkward legal and financial limbo.

    So! Are there any smart fire alarms that aren’t awful? Just had a false negative from my Nest.

    A few months after we moved in we had a lint fire, so I put a Nest in the laundry room.

    3ish years later, just had another lint fire, with enough smoke that my upstairs neighbor (shares an airwell) ran downstairs frantically; we didn’t smell it because the door was closed, concentrating the smell in the small laundry room with the silent Nest.

    Just ran a Nest test and it says it is fine.

    danielnazer,
    @danielnazer@mastodon.social avatar

    @luis_in_brief one of the many small annoyances about moving to the US from Australia was that many smoke alarms here seem to be set to ‘someone thinks about smoke’ sensitivity. (Especially on a college campus.)

    Someone toasts a bagel a little too long? Evacuate 14 floors of apartments! So I’m stunned to hear of one that’s not sensitive enough.

    May eternal shame fall upon the lawyer and law firm that filed this garbage defamation suit against Forbes and @cfarivar.

    The article at issue very clearly falls within the "fair report" privilege which protects reporting on official proceedings (such as explaining the allegations in a complaint filed in court).

    This new suit is nothing but harassment through frivolous litigation.
