This is the most insanely bonkers hack I have seen in a while. DOOM, rendered in htop (!!) at 10 fps, by spawning processes and manipulating their argv[0] and RSS.

@michaelrhanson we do these things not because they are easy, but because they are pointless

I was excited to see a new food stall at the farmers market. Turns out they sell ‘alkaline’ food only. ‘Alkaline tacos. Alkaline burgers’

I guess conspirituality (crunchy new age conspiracy theory farmers market yoga energy) is a diverse thing in California.

Crissy Field, Jan 1964
I'm sure you know that before it was big grassy field and reclaimed marsh, Crissy Field was an airstrip in the Presidio. and yes, that's the decrepit original Palace of Fine Arts in the background.

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@DavidGallagher I had no idea the field was there so late! When did it close?

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@mazz @DavidGallagher they should have kept the air traffic control tower, would have made for some great views 😅

Need John King (or similar) to write a book on the transition of the Presidio to a public space. I realize from this discussion that’s a big gap in my knowledge of the built city as it is now.

Reading this report about the massive projected overcapacity of factories for making lithium-based batteries in the very near future, and hoping that all y'all "buy an EV, save the climate!" types are gonna buy, like, ten of them and give them away as Xmas gifts or something

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-04-12/china-already-makes-as-many-batteries-as-the-entire-world-wants

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@migurski @waldoj @PaulGrahamRaven it’s a bit complicated, though, in that daytime demand will keep going up so we do need to keep building more generation. But yes, at this very moment batteries to pull in solar/hydro/wind during the day is more usefully clean than solar on the roof, which is interesting!

> The modification involved adapting the engine to receive hot air heated by the reactor instead of using conventional combustion. This was achieved by a direct air cycle setup, where the air bypassed traditional combustion chambers and instead flowed directly through the reactor core.
>
> This core contained the nuclear fuel, and as air passed through it, the intense heat generated by nuclear fission heated the air which then expanded rapidly to produce thrust.

Watching Oppenheimer again, and reminded again that I'm not particularly jealous of the genius for physics. The genius for languages, on the other hand—an intense pang of jealousy there.

Also I have no idea how anyone understood, much less enjoyed, this movie, if they had not previously read at least American Prometheus and ideally Making of the Atomic Bomb.

luis_in_brief,

@ebassi Weirdly I haven't seen any of those. Parenthood and post-COVID reduced work travel hasn't been great for my movie watching.

But Opp is definitely a vibes movie. Honestly amazing how it can sustain vibes of INCREDIBLE INTENSITY for three hours despite being entirely conversational.

luis_in_brief,
@luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

@ebassi (not necessarily good, honestly? but simply as a piece of Doing What It Said It Would Do On The Tin, brutalist cinematic architecture, impressive.)

"Enshittification" is not the answer to every issue with the digital world, not even with every issue with the commercial/capitalist digital world.

@tante it isn't perfect but booooy is it very good for a very large, very impactful class of problem. (Also, it is catchy as hell.)

@jonny I strongly recommend The First Fossil Hunters by Adrienne Mayor.

TLDR: lots of stuff like this is probably "dude found a pile of dinosaur or mammoth bones and was trying to explain what kind of animal might have produced those bones".

But the book (especially the new introduction) also speaks to your interest in railing about academia: "maybe we might have theorized this before 2000 if classicists ever talked with paleontologists but lolno sacred academic boundaries"
