Just had one of those AHA! moments: we should build houses for the homeless, of course we should, that's obvious. But we build them at FIVE HUNDRED YEAR QUALITY. That is to say, designed so that, with minimal maintenance, they will be good homes for 500 years. Yes, obviously that makes them a bit more expensive in the short term. But it means we develop a building industry with the skills to build 500 year homes. But more...

@Glencoe @simon_brooke that's a perennial issue for us. Living on a narrowboat we need to replace the domestic alternator far more often than I'd like, always because of brush or diode failure. Of course, can I simply swap out for new ones as I would on a Lucas? Can I hell. Replacement every time and no trade in either. Non serviceable parts - Grrr

@fkamiah17 yes, I almost wavered a bit in my belief back when he first seemed to pop up. But I realised what I was in danger of thinking and pulled back from the edge just in time. Constant vigilance is obviously the key.

I used to run the dishwasher when I ran out of spoons. I finally bought 6 more spoons, and now I go days longer without running the dishwasher.

I'm saving time, energy, and water every week because I bought 6 spoons. I can't believe it took me years to think of it!

@grammargirl in winter we keep the kettle on the multi fuel stove. It easily halves our LPG consumption and, as it's our sole heat source, through winter the stove is on 24/7. That's no small thing when you live on a boat and drink the amount of tea and coffee that we do. A really simple change of practice making a big difference, both financial and in carbon footprint.

    @Rasta somewhere in my storage unit I have a four volume set of American carpentry books. They date back to around 1900 and cover from the very earliest stages of the trade - simple joints, care of tools etc, all the way to running a company. It includes simple drawings for various houses.
    I must look them out - there are even a couple of sheets of workings that a carpenter of old has left folded between pages.

    @QasimRashid and if you're fleeing you take what you can that's useful. And your phone is probably already in your pocket anyhow. People probably had decent jobs and therefore phone or whatever before fleeing.
    It's like those whining that the jobless have this or that - I imagine they probably had them before they lost their job.

    Of course democracy is disappointing. That's the design. Gently disappointing everyone trying chart a middle course. Leaving everyone not entirely satisfied, because resources are finite & everyone wants different things.

    Good is mildly unsatisfying for everyone. That is the point. The least shitty system we aspire to

    Throwing mildly disappointing democracy away, for not being perfect, is insanity.

    Democratic void is terrible for nearly everyone, that's it's main feature.
