@fkamiah17 my suggestion would be a hall of residence. A bedroom/office for each member and every so often a small kitchen dining room. They have the HOC restaurant for other meals. Other than that, they have their actual home which is presumably in or close to their constituency. If they choose to live a long way from that then that's their affair and the cost is down to them. No second home allowance or flipping or tax breaks.

In the 1880s, the mark of consumption among elites was replacing gaslights for electric ones. Today it is the replacement of electric ones for useless decorative gas lights that constantly burn. We see these in many wealthy neighborhoods in Chicago.

I really don't know about the mechanics of this system. Nor do I know anything about the people. Just always find such fixtures strange.

@seanbala not exactly a new concept though. It used to be a sign of wealth to have a pale skin because you didn't have to work. Now people spend a fortune trying to get the kind of tan you can get for free just by going and toiling in the fields from sunrise to sunset.

We had maybe 4 or 5 mini estates of these in my town after WW2. Most were there until 1970s and were well loved and maintained by the tenants. In fact I think there might still be a few remaining in one area.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

So, I know I keep saying that I'll drop out of the U.S. campus anti-Joe Biden protest movement debate. I jumped in since I worry so much about our climate crisis that anything that might help out the GOP is something to worry about.

I've seen now how small the anti-Biden movement actually is despite how loud they are I'm not so worried except that since I monitor what motivates voters in the USA the true tiny size of this crowd may belie their political danger.

Mornimg run

Rather slow and short this morning - the household has been down with a rather debilitating cold that has laid us lowish for a couple of days.

Through the woods, along the old railway line and back along the Teviot. 7.5k, mainly tracks with about 1k of tarmac.

I no longer have an excuse to avoid the gardening in between time in the office.

And the has found a stick - amazing where he comes up with them.

I suppose you know the word mauve was a recent invention for the first synthetic chemical dye from the nineteenth century? It was a synthetic purple shade so needed a different name to distinguish it.
