One more story from the NHS crisis.

To be clear, I don't blame the nurses & doctors in A&E who are encountering budget & capacity pressures that would make it difficult for anyone to do a good job.

As length of waiting times in A&E grow, so do deaths while waiting to be seen; but this is part of the crisis engineered by the Tories, not a managerial or staff training issue (which is not to say these have no impact).

The Tories health 'strategy' is killing us

"Moominpappa walked down the garden to have a look at his crystal ball.
Dusk was rising from the ground, as it usually did, gathering in under the trees. Round the crystal ball was a little more light. There it stood, reflecting the whole garden, looking very beautiful on its coral pedestal. It was Moominpappa's very own magic ball of shining blue glass, the centre of the garden, of the valley, and of the whole world."

@fkamiah17 what I find great, apart from the otherworldliness, is the quite complex language. Nothing "here is John. See John run. Run John run" about it.

capnthommo,
@capnthommo@c.im avatar

@fkamiah17 yes. And that was a much more general thing when I was younger. I was handed down annuals from back in the thirties and many of the stories were, ok they were of their time but, demanding - be they instructional, adventure or amusing. From Bob Cherry or Billy Bunter to a chaps adventures bicycling around the Balkans sleeping in a tent or a Tzigane camp. They were simply capable of holding the interest and thereby encouraging you to stick with it and find out. I begin to sound a bit "it was better in the old days" but that's not how I intend it. I think we were just lucky.

capnthommo,
@capnthommo@c.im avatar

@fkamiah17 don't remember those things although I was aware of grange hill's existence. I know in the seventies there were certainly some pretty dark children's dramas on TV. I was born in the early fifties so all that is a bit late for me. But I sure remember studying Lord of the Flies and Animal Farm at 13.

@glynmoody because money spent on doing the right thing is money wasted - according to the government. They've long been crying over development funds and foreign aid. Twenty years to my knowledge.

Just had to block someone on Post who claimed to be a “medical scientist” and was urging people to get exposed to viruses to improve their immune health. When I argued, she called me silly and asked what I thought vaccines did.

Maybe she wasn't a scientist as claimed, but I have no time for this level of ignorance any longer.

capnthommo,
@capnthommo@c.im avatar

@augieray I think we're in agreement. Always better not to get the sickness or to be vaccinated. Certainly a mild dose of an illness might confer future immunity but it's always at a risk, and I've definitely known people who have contracted for example, chicken pox and later in life caught it again despite the supposed 'natural' immunity. I'd always take a vaccine if one were available and if there's none then I'd avoid catching the illness if at all possible. 'Just get it naturally' is a lazy and ignorant method which ultimately is likely to develop more virulent strains.
