Mana fefine = “powerful woman” in Tongan.

I talk a lot about #labor and indigenous #Pasifika (Pacific Islander) issues in relation to capitalism and tech.

I’m also campy and a bit dramatic.

@ml @plantscience great article! I agree with changing the name. I’m also interested in the disparities in how people pay attention to/identify plants.

I only started paying attention and knowing their names as an adult. They blended into the scenery for me growing up and weren’t taught about them school.

Why do corporations (and politicians... and everyone?) lie so transparently to the public? Is it just because we let them get away with it? How can we hold them to account? I'm so sick of the obvious lies.

I feel like holding them to account for these lies is what the media is supposed to be doing, but I don't feel like I see ANY of that anymore. Just clickbait and mindless repetition. Ugh. The world sucks.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@tim I’ve been thinking about this a lot. To me, it’s a sense of entitlement and lack of accountability. Also money seems to be more important than ethics or integrity.

In the culture I come from, being gluttonous and being extremely picky with food quality is such a virtue that anyone who doesn’t do those things is sometimes spoken of unkindly by their families. Also, when we die, our descendants have to keep giving us offerings of our favorite food. And once a year we have a festival: the hungry ghost festival where our ancestors, ostensibly hungry, get to roam among the living again to eat their favorite food.

So I think I know why I’m like this

They should give out a ‘welcome to Murica’ info pack to immigrants. Chapters: health insurance, how to write a check, why are money transfers often not instant, what the heck is a strip mall, if it’s a ‘nice neighborhood’ look closely for the racism, why are there no shops and restaurants in residential areas, they put mayo instead of butter into sandwiches, and if you don’t have a drivers license you don’t exist (just explained all of this in one afternoon to friends who just moved here)

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@skinnylatte can they also explain casseroles and those marshmallow fluff salads in the mayo chapter? I still don’t quite understand the hype (ok, I tried casserole last year and I liked it)

My main problem with ‘digital nomads’ is how, in search of ‘cheaper solutions’ to their own life problems in their own societies, they pretty much make life harder for the people from the nomad hotspots. There’s no sugar-coating this. Someone in Lisbon or Bali doesn’t easily have ‘a cheaper place’ to move to. I don’t think there’s an ethical way to do this, and legally it’s also such a fraught lifestyle. You’re one major illness or one global pandemic away from having to leave ‘your home’.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@skinnylatte I love this discourse lol. I agree though. There’s a certain privilege in being able to leave the U.S./“first world countries” for other countries. I was reading accounts of digital nomads in Ecuador who came for the “cheap living” but didn’t do enough diligence to learn about the social and economic issues that led to what’s happening now.

I wish I had known the Jollibee workers were organizing!

I would love to see a spotlight on majority Asian-Pacific Islander unions. Especially since we are overrepresented in food service, domestic work, and medical work. https://www.instagram.com/justice4jollibeeworkers/

What is the most ridiculous question or complaint that you've had from a Customer/Client?

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@RickiTarr I have too many stories. When I was a server at a fancy restaurant, a lady told me I ruined her family’s Christmas party when I put the wrong silverware down. She seemed like the only one who was genuinely upset though.

Question for the in-the-know union folks (with background first): I'm pro-union, but my experience as a disabled worker in UAW 2865 was one of the most awful experiences of betrayal and abuse I've ever experienced in any field. Which union you're in and what their culture is matters.

Since a number of grad workers are trying to unionize, it might be good to talk about which unions currently have the most honest democratic cultures you know of? #Labor #HigherEd #UCAccessNow @academicchatter

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@glightly @academicchatter Are you looking for an academic perspective only? I was a part of OPEIU but it’s so large that I only really had contact with other tech companies that were in the same local my union was in.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@glightly @academicchatter Gotcha. My experience was mostly positive, but I think it was because we were small. It’s a bit easier to get consensus when you work at a company with less than 250 people or so. That’s not to say there weren’t disagreements.

My company union was part of a local with other tech companies & nonprofits. We were assigned one or two organizers from OPEIU to guide us through things like voluntary recognition and getting our first contract.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

@glightly @academicchatter We were in the early stages of starting our own union which is a lot different than when you already have a contract in place. Sadly, I was laid off before the contract was finished.

Abled people: the primary function of the alt text field is not to act as a little joke for other sighted people. It's not a fucking easter egg despite that having been normalized by XKCD.

You can certainly have a sense of humor in the alt text field just as you do the text text field, BUT after you've actually provided equitable alt text & img description. Transcribe the fucking text that sighted people are given in the image and describe any other relevant non-text parts of the img.

Wow. Watching Lily Gladstone speak her indigenous language at the Golden Globes really touched me.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

I've always felt weird speaking or bringing anything of my culture into professional, white-dominated spaces. The first time I ever really used a Polynesian language at work was when I did a presentation on Native Hawaiian research methods.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

That was LAST YEAR. It was actually painful because I had to confront years of "code-switching" in front of other researchers.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

To be taken seriously as a researcher with the body and experiences I've had means that I've had to cling to whiteness in order to prove my credibility. I trained myself to be as "articulate" (code word for sounding "white") as possible.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

So yeah, this is a big deal. I want to normalize speaking non-English languages in these elite spaces.
