Mana fefine = “powerful woman” in Tongan.

I talk a lot about #labor and indigenous #Pasifika (Pacific Islander) issues in relation to capitalism and tech.

I’m also campy and a bit dramatic.

Located in the Bay Area, California / Ohlone Land.

#introduction hello! I’m doing this quickly because I’m suddenly getting a lot of new followers!

Hello! I’m “B” and I’m an indigenous #Pasifika femme-y nb person living in the Bay Area, CA. I use both she/they pronouns.

I post a mix of random thoughts and say an insightful thing like once a month.

*Due to safety reasons, I am not allowing profiles with no content to follow me. I’m trying to build community over “followers” so please engage a bit first. Thanks :)

Side rant: It’s also really weird being one of the few vocal Pacific Islanders on here. As much as I hate X, there was a lot of discourse about PI issues because there were so many of us there.

I like the fedi and (most) of the people in it, but it sucks being one of a (literal) few who actually talk about these issues.

A part of me is used to it but another part is wondering why I have to keep doing it.

Indigenous erasure is very real both online and irl. Just because our communities tend to be smaller, doesn’t make our issues less important.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

And I think being a “decentralized” SM has a lot to do with that too. Even decentralization feels weird to me because I come from a culture of “centralization”.

Pacific Islanders see and recognize one another and trace our history back to a central place. My community is small enough that we know where one another comes from given our last names.

So yeah, lots of conflicting feelings here. I do feel a sense of belonging in some ways, but in other ways not.

@BlackAzizAnansi right?? It’s really a shame. I wish the fediverse was a safer, more welcoming place

@Toastie @mementomaori me too 😭😭 him and so many other folks I miss.

But thank you and I’m happy you’re here too! big hugs

Update: Wow! Thanks all. In the time it took me to write a follow up to this thread, I got a bunch of nice messages and engagement already. I genuinely was not expecting that.

I do appreciate it. Much ‘ofa (love) to you all! ❤️

{ Reddit said in a filing to the Securities and Exchange Commission that its users’ posts are “a valuable source of conversation data and knowledge” that has been and will continue to be an important mechanism for training AI and large language models. The filing also states that the company believes “we are in the early stages of monetizing our user base,” and proceeds to say that it will continue to sell users’ content to companies that want to train LLMs and that it will also begin “increased use of artificial intelligence in our advertising solutions.” }

    @divya ugh, I’m sorry. My family was like this too. I told them that if I got married I wouldn’t have enough time to work and send them money anymore.

    They stopped after that lol

    Why do marginalized people have to suffer so that others can have “nuanced conversations” about their struggles?

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    And why do these “nuanced conversations” never lead to action?

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    I’ll be honest by saying that it’s really telling who is here for the “conversation” and who is ready to actually change these things.

    I can’t afford another conversation when I’m worried about real-life repercussions for my safety and the safety of my loved ones.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    Long story short: When people are complaining that they don’t want the media to platform yet ANOTHER right-wing terrorist, don’t get upset when people aren’t “nuanced” enough for you.

    We’re talking about real people’s lives here. Some of us don’t have the privilege to separate themselves from this sort of violence.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    And if you know anything about trauma, you know that “nuance” doesn’t exist when you’re in fight-or-flight mode.

    Be grateful if these stories don’t affect you in this way.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @Paxxi yup! That’s what’s so frustrating to me. How many tragedies do we need to finally put two and two together? Who is ultimately benefiting off of this?

    I read the article and watched some of the interview after Lorenz said on Blue Sky (not here, strangely) she wasn’t monetizing it.

    She asked questions that didn’t really add or clarify anything. I couldn’t finish it because she wasn’t challenging Raichik enough, imo.

    It seemed more like a job interview.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @Paxxi I do interviews for a living and it was clear that many, if not all, of the questions asked were leading questions.

    They also didn’t flow very well and she never stayed on topic. At one point, Raichik started asking HER questions.

    It wasn’t well-prepared at all. It seemed like a rushed effort to put content out.

    @divya and the irony of two well-off cis women having a lil “conversation” while trans and non-binary kids have to worry about their lives on a daily basis. Pathetic.
