Mana fefine = “powerful woman” in Tongan.

I talk a lot about #labor and indigenous #Pasifika (Pacific Islander) issues in relation to capitalism and tech.

I’m also campy and a bit dramatic.

I hate that the NFL is doing the most for Pacific Islander representation this month 😭 https://twitter.com/NFL/status/1788962203896254855 #AAPIHeritageMonth #AAPI

I know we’re over represented in this sport but c’mon!! We’re more than this

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

Understand that we’re not all athletes or dancers. Some of us are nerdy, awkward and chronically online.

I’m living proof!!

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

But really, I’d love to see more representation that isn’t centered around our bodies.

That’s why I’ve always been vocal about my identity in tech. Many people either don’t know we even exist or have racist notions that we’re somehow not “smart” enough for this field.

The sad thing is a lot of PI kids end up believing this too.

To give you an idea of the Asian American anger at David Chang for being an asshole who wanted to enforce trademarks on ‘chilli crunch’, I was at my friend’s home in LA looking at his Asian cookbooks when he said, ‘you wanna see some garbage?’ Then he pulled out the Momofuku cookbook and we both laughed and laughed

@divya @aarbrk lol I was wondering what the context for this was

At a large LA park:

  • kids! Playing softball
  • grandpas and grandmas! Walking around, talking to friends, playing Chinese opera loudly
  • people of many diverse backgrounds and ages

Just some simple things I miss about real cities. San Francisco feels like a very weird, hollowed out city on many fronts. I think if I see a bunch of kids at once in SF I’ll be like ‘wow’. Outside of certain SF neighborhoods (Chinatown, Mission, TL), the city just feels very homogenous and bland to me :/

I was wondering why I kept seeing all these Pacific Islander events coming up and realized… it’s #AAPI month lol.

I normally don’t like this month because I never felt represented despite the “PI” part. But lately, I’ve noticed more spaces where they are intentionally including us. That’s pretty cool.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

I still think #AAPI is a problematic and flattening term. It’s impossible to fully give representation to all the cultures under this label.

betsyvr,
@betsyvr@union.place avatar

It’s also okay to say just say “Asian/Asian American” when you’re referring to those groups. I get annoyed when Pacific Islanders are dragged into these conversations that are not for us.

An example: The model minority myth which is not a common experience for us.

    For someone who lives in San Francisco who doesn’t know how to drive a car, I’ve certainly eaten my way through large chunks of the Bay Area

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @skinnylatte Sadly, this is a product of our crappy public transit infrastructure. Many Americans were raised (including myself) to believe that driving means being independent.

    In reality, drivers are dependent on car insurance, gas prices, and traffic congestion. :/

    Me: I never eat frozen food!

    Also me: I love yoshinoya frozen gyudon!

    I’ve now changed my mind to accept culturally relevant frozen food

    (Growing up in the tropics, we never had anything frozen. It’s more of a cultural bias from lack of exposure)

    Yoshinoya is also what I spent all my pocket money on as a teenager, so it also makes me feel nostalgic even tho I can make better gyudon from scratch now

    So, I know many people treat Shawn Fain as a labor leader. He is, but one of the things I liked about his speech today was acknowledging and respecting people who are leading/contributing to the labor movement in their own ways.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    He gave a shout out to one of the organizers of the VW union in Tennessee who was instrumental in winning their union on Friday.

    He didn’t claim to be their leader or even being responsible for their win. He used his platform to acknowledge that THEY did that themselves.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    One of the things I hate about the way we recognize “leadership” is that it’s a title given to people who are the loudest or benefit from privileges that allow them to be seen as “leaders”.

    Movement leaders are often depicted as a single person (usually a man) who is responsible for the work of many people, who played many important roles in the movement.

    People are easily erased from these histories. This is counterintuitive to real, structural change.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    TL;DR: Shawn Fain gave a great speech about working class power (not the power of a few). As influential as he is, he’s just one dude and we can’t move forward without everyone else. He acknowledges this.

    And you don’t need to be a white dude standing at a podium to be a labor leader. We should question and dismantle “leadership” in favor of collective power.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @strypey that’s really fascinating! Thanks for sharing this. I haven’t seen examples of this in real life, so it’s important to think about how this would actually play out.

    And yeah, when I said “dismantling leadership” I meant dismantling the hierarchies that create the conditions of how we currently define a “leader”.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @strypey being a “leader” implies there are “followers”. But what if we redefined that dynamic to one where everyone contributes with their unique perspectives. Essentially everyone being “a leader”.

    Maybe I’m describing Anarchism actually lmao

    I agree though that sometimes people fall into certain roles that make this difficult.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @strypey I’ll read the link you sent me too. I’m just speaking off the top of my head now
