I talk a lot about #labor and indigenous #Pasifika (Pacific Islander) issues in relation to capitalism and tech.

I’m also campy and a bit dramatic.

    @divya this really heated me this morning. I used to follow her, but I unfollowed because she seemed like an unethical person who does anything for clout.

    She’s really profiting off of Nex’s death considering the timing of her interview. Just disgusting all around.

    Question 12 from the official USCIS Civics exam that must be passed to become a naturalized US citizen. (Example correct answers shown.)

    Just saying.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @mattblaze I helped my mom with this exam. They ask you three out of 100 questions. Luckily they asked her things like “Who is our current president” which offset weird ones like this.

    It’s route memorization but with American exceptionalism. The entire process of getting citizenship here is to prove that you “deserve” it.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @CStamp @mattblaze yeah, they ask a lot of ridiculous questions. On the application they ask you if you’ve ever been part of a terrorist organization. As if anyone serious would say “yes” to that.

    One of the reasons I very much dislike some of the anti-progressive candidates running for elections this year, is that for the entire six months they were campaigning to recall Chesa, their (not Asian) campaigners were yelling at ME outside Trader Joe’s constantly and telling ME I was anti-Asian for not wanting to recall Chesa. So the ‘lean into AAPI race politics and make it conservative’ angle is very obvious to me

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @skinnylatte These conservative groups also tend to ignore how mass incarceration affects specific AAPI communities, like SEA’s and PI’s, who are more likely to be incarcerated than other groups in that category.

    A lot of us cannot rely on policing for safety. We are already over policed!

    I always prioritize the writings of Black women in my lists because they are often overlooked and/ or not properly cited for their work.

    Having experienced this gap of women’s voices missing in my own history, it feels important to me.

    also I know I’m an anarchist, but it feels strange for Mission Local to describe Tan as a “moderate” when his stances are pretty right-wing? I know SF politics are weird for the US because we don’t have a local Republican party with any real power so everyone is a Democrat, but we might as well call people with conservative stances what they are: conservative

    "This case is a major turning point for humanity, because it marks the first time in history when a Global South country bravely crossed a red line drawn by the colonial West and demanded its favourite settler colony, Israel, be held to account for the crimes it has long been committing against an Indigenous people.

    Today, thanks to South Africa, the entire colonial West, and its centuries-long history of theft, dispossession, and injustice is on trial at the World Court."

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    I know there are some valid critiques that ICJ only administers "white man's justice". They did not call for a ceasefire and well, they ARE the colonial west.

    But this is still a huge, unprecedented step. This isn't the only form of accountability, but a good step for getting closer to a ceasefire and eventually, freedom.

    Seeing a lot of people saying things like "why don't Americans protest more." I'm not exactly sure how to respond because:

    1. In 2020 America had the largest sustained series of protests in world history. Americans protest plenty.

    2. American activists are shot by police at a very high rate. Don't forget this.

    Americans protest at a very high rate already. We don't protest more because so many of us have been murdered and our police are very dangerous. Hope this helps.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @sidereal We've BEEN protesting! Everything. But it's only one tool in the toolbox. There are plenty of people who are organizing, doing survival work, and legal work that moves the needle.

    Not everyone can attend protests either. I hope that people can confront ableism in the movement-- that you don't have to be an able-bodied revolutionary at the frontlines to get things done.

    Plenty of people are doing great work in the capacity that they can.

    @ELS @ml @plantscience Here is what the author states in the conclusion:

    “Thus, I am proposing a new name for “plant blindness”: plant awareness disparity (PAD). I have specifically chosen this term for a few reasons. First, PAD is not a disability metaphor, and as such, removes the ableism associated with the term “plant blindness.”

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @ml @plantscience yes! I think it also leads to climate change denialism. A lot of times people aren’t aware of how connected we are to our environment.

    betsyvr,
    @betsyvr@union.place avatar

    @ml @plantscience sadly, I don’t think a lot of people learn too much about that. My religious family told me God put animals and plants here to feed humans and I believed it until I was a teenager.

    I didn’t really learn too much about this interconnection until I went to community college. It finally clicked once I learned more.
