Finally got my birthday present! A giant caramel apple from Kilwins!

TIL that caramel apples were first invented in the 1950s! Can you imagine living your whole life, then dying in the 1940s and therefore NEVER experiencing a caramel apple? I shudder to think.

A school in #NewMexico says it will be reviewing its #graduation ceremony attire policy to include more #cultural elements.

This comes after a recent incident involving an #Indigenous student whose beaded grad cap was taken away by two school staff members.

@msquebanh Farmington, where this incident occurred, is in one of the more “red” counties in Nee Mexico. At the same time, the county includes part of the Navajo Nation and has a great many Native residents, so you’d like to think they’d already had some awareness of Native cultures.

I have some coworkers and was telling them about how we used to take our car stereo face plates with us when we left the car back in the days when stereos weren't integrated into the dash and you wanted a nice one.

@mekkaokereke We always hear right-wing types telling us that we can't "throw money at the problem" to deal with societal ills. I think the amount of money we spend on police is itself a case of "throwing money at the problem," and it's clear that that money is being misspent judging by the results!

Why is it that the people who brag about being "self-made" aren't?

If you turned out successful odds are you had help, a lot of it, and a good amount of luck on top of that. Imagine being so self absorbed that you don't give credit where credit is due.

We know that trust in the NHS has been dealing for some time.... and it would seem likely that increasing waiting lists would be a significant contributory factor to that decline.

However, new research by a team including an ex-PhD student of mine, has concluded that actually the Q. of waiting lists is immaterial to declining trust in the NHS, rather the key variables are socio-political (ethnicity, age, working situation & party affiliation).

    @nm @dafne @vegan We are obviously seen as a "target market" by some companies. Not any different in my mind from the "rainbow capitalists" who market to LGBTQIA+ folks on the assumption that we all have a ton of disposable income (hah!).

    @riversidebryan @tismark @chunshek @wadevanstaden I agree. I decided to try out Threads because a lot of my former Twitter mutuals are on IG. I see some of them there but the one big feed where EVERYONE is is just crazy. I think they have to at least add a "following" feed for it to be semi-usable. But I still prefer it here and am not planning on leaving.

    @riversidebryan That pretty much confirms a lot of my own thinking. I am not doing a great job with my diet at this point in time, but I have long thought that a less-processed diet centered around minimal/unprocessed carbohydrates would be the best way to go for most people. it would also be much better for our environment as well!

    @riversidebryan I'm just going to remind everyone that Elon Musk censored Turkish opposition parties on Twitter (at the request of the current government) just prior to their presidential election, which was very close. If the opposition were to have won, it's unlikely they would be banning pride celebrations in Turkiye.
