I'd like to try a little social experiment. It is 5:37 Eastern Time (US). Could someone in the central time zone reply to this message, and ask someone in the Mountain Time zone to reply, and so on? Can we get around the world? (feel free to skip time zones with few residents)

This report, from Just Security, is the best compendium of Trump/Republican dictatorship planning I've seen.

https://www.justsecurity.org/92714/american-autocracy-threat-tracker/

Read it, please, and pass it around to everyone you know -- especially people you don't agree with politically.

One notable aspect of this report is that it puts budding fascism in context. Big Journalism doesn't do context, so we have to rely on smaller organizations and motivated individuals most of the time.

Again, please read it and pass it along.

@dangillmor Thanks, this looks like a great resource. Despite being 'comprehensive', it still didn't touch on two topics that really creep me out:

  1. Trump and allies (e.g. Eastman) have repeatedly promoted the idea of retroactively revoking birthright citizenship, even for Americans whose parents were permitted to enter the country (e.g. Kamala Harris and Niki Haley). This exact assault may not be imminent, but it reveals that Trump will entertain denying basic citizenship rights to his political opponents.
  2. Trump has floated the idea of confiscating assets from his perceived political opponents. His American Academy proposal included special confiscatory taxes on universities with DEI programs "I will advance a measure to have them fined up to the entire amount of their endowment. "

Trump's official statements on these topics are below:

What is the function of the "Notes" field that we see on profiles? It seems that when I add a note, I get a confirmation that it's "saved", but when I come back to the profile, nothing is there (usually). Sometimes I also see the note on other profiles (especially if I click "back" to get to another profile). I tried this on multiple accounts -- on my Mastodon server, on another Mastodon server, and on a Lemmy server. I guess I'll need to submit a bug report, but I can't even find basic documentation about how this is supposed to behave.

If you know someone who needs medical care but cannot pay for it, look into the Financial Assistance Policy of your local medical providers. For instance, Emory will provide full "emergency and medically necessary" care for a family of 2 with under $25k of income (in addition to other situations as well).
https://www.emoryhealthcare.org/-/media/Project/EH/Emory/ui/insurance/ehc-financial-assistance-policy.pdf

This financial assistance is supported by the Georgia Indigent Care Trust Fund.
https://dch.georgia.gov/providers/provider-types/hospital-providers/indigent-care-trust-fund

The billing office will not necessarily tell you about the availability of financial assistance, nor is this information always clearly posted in the hospital.

DecaturNature,
@DecaturNature@theatl.social avatar

@futurebird @StillIRise1963 He made it abundantly clear when he promoted the lie that Kamala Harris and Nikki Haley are not natural born US citizens. If they are not natural born citizens, then they are not citizens (since they have not been naturalized), and neither are many other Americans. This clearly signaled Trump's desire to revoke citizenship from many thousands of Americans (which would inevitably lead to more widespread attacks on citizenship).

DecaturNature,
@DecaturNature@theatl.social avatar

@nazokiyoubinbou @futurebird @StillIRise1963 True. His attacks on Harris and Haley need to be viewed in light of his broader attacks on birthright citizenship, and his mass-deportation plan. The attack on Harris and Haley show that he wants to apply this retroactively (and arbitrarily), and these deportations will be completely lawless if he gets his way.

The election isn't the last line of defense, but it's the strongest line. If people can't be bothered to make the small effort to stop it at the election, it's going to be much harder to stop it afterwards. I want to scream when people assert that we don't need to bother with the election because "institutions" will prevent horrible things from happening -- as if we can rely on a small number of people to put their careers and even their lives on the line (after he pardons the Jan 6 criminals), when the rest of us couldn't even be bothered to vote.

I recently stumbled across 'Metric Media', and was shocked to see dozens of seemingly legit local news websites that were nothing more than partisan propaganda mills. Today I learned that a name has been coined for them "Pink Slime":

"Pink slime websites are loosely defined as partisan sites masquerading as local news and funded by dark money."

Survey - how do you promote your Mastodon instance? I'm thinking of writing a letter to the editor to the local news website. Can anyone point me to examples of a letter to the editor? Since our instance is focused on the Atlanta region, a local news website makes sense. Maybe other instances would write to a magazine that serves the same community.

DecaturNature,

@davew @jd @vjprema Is this 'multi-click' problem only an issue when you arrive at the Mastodon users' page via a third-party website? When I'm using my Mastodon account, it seems to always be 'one click' to follow someone who I discover via search or boosting. So this is really an issue of mastodon integration with the west of the Web. In that case, the function needs to be incorporated into the web-browser you're using, either by the above extension or perhaps natively by @FirefoxNightly

EDIT: while this did solve some problems for some people, it didn’t solve the notification issue that was reported.

I just found and fixed an issue with infosec.exchange that I hadn't seen in a long time. The problem was that sometimes feeds would not refresh, particularly notifications. The problem started around the time I upgraded to 4.2.0, however that isn't the problem. A look at the web server error logs shows lots of instances of this error:
24: Too many open files

This is a problem I fought a lot in the early days. The issue is the file limits in ubuntu are too low for busy web servers (infosec.exhange web servers regularly have 3000-4000 active connections)

The fix is pretty simple - adding
LimitNOFILE=1000000
to the nginx.service file. The problem is that when I upgraded mastodon, I also upgraded nginx. And apparently, like a bastard, nginx replaced the system service file, which no longer contained the LimitNOFILE=1000000 statement.

Hope that helps someone else...

DecaturNature,

@mekkaokereke @emilyk @Jorsh What do you think causes an account on an actively moderated server to be a privileged status?

  • Are good servers unable to keep up with demand by users?
  • Are users unable to find good servers?
  • Does a good server require not only active moderation but an appropriate theme/community, meaning that there simply aren't goods servers for many people?

Georgia is seeing an increase in COVID hospitalizations over the past month (via CDC's Resp-net). While hospitalization data is still preliminary for anything after July 15, the ER test data shows a clear and sustained increase in region 4 (the southeast USA) since late June.

Something I really really can't wait to be able to use and have on #activitypub #mastodon #calckey etc.. Is Public Lists that we can follow, heck even better, Public lists that a curated bunch of people can craft and then have those Public Lists as much visible than the current Directory of people on each instance.

And yes, people should have the right to set "I don't want to be in any public or private lists" on their account to stay in control.

@rmdes As a stop-gap there's fediverse.info and tootfinder. Instances can also maintain these lists as supporting documentation (we're talking about it here at theATL) ...but you're right that it would be really nice to have it built into the the main UI

What #mastodon needs is for me to be able to find people and posts by searching for them. I feel comfortable saying this after a full year of use. from my lips to @Gargron ’s ears 1/x

DecaturNature,
@DecaturNature@theatl.social avatar

@seachanger It may take a few hours to index your account. It also does not have a feature to search users... but see this: https://fediverse.info/explore/people

It would be nice to have something that's integrated with the main Mastodon system. A recent post from the Mastodon developers hinted that they are adding search to their milestones but have not shared details. They have previously said that they intentionally omitted search... so I think it's unlikely to be a general, default search likeon Twitter

@kas @plants Does it help control the ivy? I'm in the USA where common "English" ivy is invasive... it looks like someone did some guerilla gardening... according to Wikipedia:
