Harvard has rescinded the suspension of a student who had been reporting for the Crimson on the pro-Palestinian encampment, raising questions about how that particular student was identified in the first place. According to the Crimson, the student had not taken part in the protest and had only “infrequently” reported on the encampment. #journalism https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/5/11/harvard-crimson-reporter-involuntary-leave-protest/

Is implying things would be different if he had "frequently" reported on the encampment?

#Trump losing 17% of the vote in a closed swing-state primary to a candidate who dropped out months ago should lead to a lotta commentary about his weakness. It won’t, because the press is obsessed with Trumpers sticking with Trump regardless, but it should. #Election2024

In the context of a close general election, potentially losing 17% of your own party is a significant weakness.

Key point is this: "companies and end users should always use multi-factor authentication to lockdown accounts when possible and ensure it’s compliant with the standard when available. available through push notifications or one-time passwords provided by text, email, or authenticator apps are better than nothing, but as events over the past few years have demonstrated, they are themselves easily defeated in credential phishing attacks"

"Meta doesn’t want its new app Threads to become another Twitter, full of heated political debates and the resulting toxicity that entails. In an announcement today, the company detailed how it will approach the recommendation of political content across both Instagram and its sister app, Threads, a competitor to Elon Musk’s X. In short, it will no longer push politics on users. Similar to Meta’s existing policies on Facebook, Instagram and Threads’ recommendation engines now won’t proactively suggest political posts to user by default, the company said on Friday."

Leaving aside the obvious GOP fascism just for the moment, a key reason why Ukraine is losing support broadly across the American electorate is that there is no apparent practical endgame in the conflict for Ukraine. It's obvious what Putin wants. But what does Ukraine really want that is practical to achieve? It is not unreasonable that at some point this question has to be asked repeatedly, given the reportedly more than $75 billion dollars of support that has flowed from the U.S. to that country.

BrianPierce,
@BrianPierce@mstdn.social avatar

@lauren
Given what the ukrainians have done with that $75 billion, it seems like money well spent compared to the costs for us in europe and asia of letting #russia conquer #ukraine For comparison, the annual DoD budget is over ten times that at $816 billion.

What we've probably learned from them is likely worth a good bit too.

I'm happy so far as a US taxpayer.

I'm guessing a better endgame for might require finally getting F16s in use and loosening some restrictions on weapon usage.

"This is why services are so horny to drive you to install their app rather using their websites: they are trying to get you to do something that, given your druthers, you would prefer not to do. They want to force you to exit through the gift shop, you want to carve a desire path straight to the parking lot." https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/24/everything-not-mandatory/#is-prohibited

About this new Threads Post Reader...

So, you follow an account on @threads.net. Now they CAN NOT see your comments, but other Fediverse accounts CAN see the comments. You CAN NOT see comments of the Threads users, but of course Threads users CAN see them. You are entirely isolated from Threads except you can read the post. It's simply just a Threads Post Reader.

If the Threads author wants to see the Fediverse comments they need to create a Fediverse account and follow themselves. 🤔

Q: Why are Black neighborhoods so often high crime neighborhoods? Must be a lawless people! Violent! Thieves! Predators!

A: There is no such thing as a "high crime neighborhood." The whole concept is entirely made up based on our notion of what we consider a crime.

You may be thinking:🤔 Wait... What?! Not true! A high crime neighborhood has more drug use and sales, theft, and even murder!
