#Dengue #OneHealth
Since it is trending in Argentina and elsewhere in the world, a simple observation:
"Humans are the main host reservoir for dengue, but a meta-analysis by Gwee et al., considers how different animals may be involved in maintaining the virus in an enzootic cycle [52]. The results of the meta-analysis showed that dengue virus is present in 10.1% of bats, 34.1% of pigs and 27.3% of non-human primates."
The Sustainability Ambassadors Global Exchange (SAGE) Program is back!
We are thrilled to announce the SAGE PhD Fellows program! This 3-year program is intended to nurture future impact leaders in solution-based sustainability research projects co-created with communities and consortia members.
In collaboration with The Nordic Centre in India we are also launching the 2nd year of our Sustainability Ambassadors Global Exchange (SAGE) Senior Ambassadors Program!
This is a unique opportunity to activate bright and motivated minds to consider current issues in global sustainability, with India as the target.
"Fipronil and imidacloprid are widely used in flea treatments, which are typically applied to the back of the pet’s neck once a month. These two chemicals are extremely potent neurotoxic insecticides and it is deeply concerning that they are routinely found on the hands of dog owners through ongoing contact with their pet. Pet owners will also be upset to learn that they are accidentally polluting our rivers by using these products.”

"Aus noch unbekannter Ursache kollidierte der Citroen-Fahrer mit dem vorausfahrenden Mountainbikefahrer."
Unbekannte Ursache.
Bekannte Ursachen wären z.B. zu geringer Abstand zum/zur vorausfahrenden Fahrradfahrer:in, zu geringer Abstand beim Überholen, mangelnde Bremsbereitschaft, nicht-witterungsangepasste Geschwindigkeit in Kombination mit - last but not least - fehlender sicherer Infrastruktur.

Humans are increasingly passing pathogens to animal populations, imperilling endangered species such as chimpanzees and gorillas.
"Why the world’s first pandemic treaty may never happen
With less than six months to go, countries are still not really negotiating, say diplomats."
"The U.S., EU, U.K., Canada, Switzerland and United Arab Emirates have all indicated that they aren’t happy with the entire article on the mechanism.
The first diplomat said they believed that industry is the “main pressure” on high-income countries, with countries stating in talks that the private sector doesn’t want the mechanism."
How do pesticides get into oysters?
Walking along estuaries in NSW, one finds that most oysters have been 'harvested' by very hungry people. And no, not by oystercatchers.
"Pesticide residue from farms and towns is ending up in fresh oysters. Most of the herbicides, insecticides and fungicides we found are used routinely by farmers, land managers and council workers."

Remember when in 2020 we realised that the zombie, nuclear apocalypse was, well, just a fantasy, and that our death will be silent and slow, carried on by microorganisms that sometimes are not even fully alive (until they meet us) who will take us one by one?
Yep, that's true for every living thing.
@alx Definitely recommend this book: Spillover by David Quammen, if you're interested in zoonotic diseases. We have known this for many years in #veterinarymedicine and I recommend this book to my 2nd year vet students for a little light reading! #OneHealth And, yes, #climatechange is definitely having an effect globally!
Not only an important avian health issue, but a public health issue. Also has implications for understanding other viruses. And at the intersection of climate and biodiversity crises, and a blaring siren regarding the poultry industry (on a related matter, read Robert Wallace's "Big Farms Make Big Flu," about swine flu).
How the current bird flu strain evolved to be so deadly
„Human health and environmental health are interdependent. My ministry supports integrated, holistic approaches like #OneHealth and #PlanetaryHealth. The priorities should be the precautionary principle and prevention.“ − Federal Minister for the Environment Steffi Lemke at #WHS2023
Now out! "Global patterns and correlates in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in humans," led by E Mendelsohn, a collaboration between EcoHealth Alliance, TP Van Boeckel + R Laxminarayan
In this paper we model what factors predict the rate emergence of novel strains of antimicrobial resistant bacteria across countries globally.
Notice how essentially nobody in Washington asks “if we can afford” an $886 billion defense budget?
No, we only hear that when we need health care, or student debt relief, or climate action, or paid family leave, or universal pre-K, or child-poverty relief.
Regardless that there's strong evidence, that investment in education, against climate crisis/for climate mitigation or prevention in the health care sector pays off pretty soon.

I have a softspot for grandmas. Here an interesting episode on how the role of grandmas and elder people in communities is often underestimated and antagonised, which often results in conflicts and undermines the work for embracing or giving up knowledge and practices in medicine and healthcare, using an 'innovation through tradition approach'
While doing some research on #design for #healthcare, I found this amazing podcast by One Health Trust
Episodes are short, accessible to non-specialist, and insightful, with a range of experts and community-leaders sharing sides of medicine and healthcare that a rarely discussed, especially on how climate change, societal issues, political choices, and human health are deeply interconnected
I, for one, recommend #Cherokee, for one.
The fluid, function-based gender concept could change thinking and human behavior create a better, #OneWorld, because we need #OneHealth to adapt and survive as a species.
