Sam Altman’s vision for AI proliferation will require a lot more computation and the energy to power it.
He admitted it at Davos, but he said we shouldn’t worry: an energy breakthrough was coming, and in the meantime we could just use “geoengineering as a stopgap.” That should set off alarm bells.
This presentation by @timnitGebru, "Eugenics and the Promise of Utopia through AGI", is a concentrated braindump that illustrates the path from centuries of racism and oppression to today's techbro mythology of a technological utopia.
It's also a reminder that people who talk-up "AGI" have ugly ideologies and don't know jack about AI.
Trying something new, everyone is guaranteed an interview! Open interviews! For a limited time no one will be skipped (except for clear cases of abuse).
So we still have about 10 more 100% remote positions to hire for full-time market-fair positions here at QOTO/CleverThis.
100% remote, work from anywhere, even the beach, market-fair offers. Ethics first, we treat our people like family.
We have an urgent need for Machine learning experts with a background in NLP and Deep Learning (Natural Language Processing and Neural Networks). There is a focus on Knowledge Graphs, Mathematics, Java, C, looking for Polyglots.
We are an open-source first company, we give back heavily to the OSS community.
We need everything from jr to sr, data scientist to programmer. If your IT and your good, you might be a fit.
I will personally be both your direct boss, and hiring manager. I am also the founder and inventor.
The NLP position can be found at this link, other positions can be found on the menu bar on the left:
If you would like to submit yourself for an interview, which for a limited time I am guaranteeing you will get a first stage interview, then you can submit your application here, and even schedule your interview as you apply, instantly!
I used to look at these kinds of statements as deceptive PR, but increasingly I see them more through the lens of faith.
The tech billionaires are true believers and don’t accept they’re misunderstanding things like intelligence because they believe themselves to be geniuses.
To them, everything is reduced to computation: the brain is a computer; climate change is a technological problem. But none of that is true, and we’re setting ourselves up for chaos if we keep believing these men who assert tech will save us from the crises we face.
“The AI faith has many popes—an almost exclusively white male cohort of thirtysomething executives and programmers who genuinely believe they are working on the most important thing in the world.”
The media is obsessed with the story of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI” who left Google to warn us about his life’s work.
Hinton isn’t worried about the immediate harms of AI and even dismisses those concerns as not “existentially serious.” But his warnings are nothing but sci-fi fantasies that distract us from real problems. For Disconnect, I argue we should ignore him.
If you want to know why people don't trust #OpenAI or Microsoft or Google to fix a broken faux-#AGI#chatbot#LLM, consider that using suicidal teens for A/B testing was regarded as perfectly fine by a Silicon Valley "health" startup developing "#AI"-based suicide prevention tools.
(Aside: This is also where we get when techbros start doing faux-utilitarian moral calculus instead of just not doing obviously unethical shit.)
There needs to be support group for those of us seeing the ridiculous #AGI apocalypse and utopian cults steering policy, research, education (they got all the undergrads), and PR.
The era of Artificial Intelligence is here, and boy are people freaking out. Fortunately, I am here to bring the good news: AI will not destroy the world, and in fact may save it.
Y'all people told me that Yudkowsky gave a m'fuckin TED talk. How is this even real life? Someone just decides to call themselves "a decision theorist" with ZERO experience, expertise or anything & start a cult where people worship his self proclaimed "high IQ", then advocates for terrorism to stop the impending #AGI apocalypse & New York Times, TIME, TED are just like whoaaaa. Genius. Tell us more. Not to mention all the awful stuff about assault written in this letter. https://fredwynne.medium.com/an-open-letter-to-vitalik-buterin-ce4681a7dbe
I am still hiring for top-tier programmers and data scientist. Please reboost, share, recommend, or reply if you know anyone who might be interested.
Fully remote! Live and work from anywhere with internet (including the beach!)
I am the company owner, and will be both your direct boss and the hiring manager.
Semantic Web, AI, and Java are some of the key techs. Open-source and Linux oriented experience ideally. OSS contributions and activity will be weighted heavily, particularly in relevant areas.
It never ceases to annoy me that the people who fear #xrisk from #AGI essentially fear that some very smart #AI will subliminally persuade its creators and controllers to do things that enable it to escape their control and/or gain control over ‘real world' levers of power.
Meanwhile they dismiss the whole idea of current #LLMs having what mimics subtle agendas, grounded in how they have been trained, reinforcing established modes of thought TODAY in harmful ways.
The company's obsession with #AGI doom is a deliberate distraction from the real evils of their work:
• promoting bias
• presenting misinformation masquerading as authoritative truth
• appropriating the value of others' work for its eventual profit, and
• consuming massive amounts of energy contributing to environmental degradation.
