Building web stuff for fun and living since 2000s. Blogger, sometimes translator, book author in hiatus, former teacher, overly curious mind.

This is my account on Kbin, a link aggregating service similar to Lemmy. I use it to post links I find interesting for various reasons. Not always endorsing things I post here.

I'm also there: https://hachyderm.io/@lukem

Greetings from Poland.

Typo leaks millions of US military emails to Mali web operator (archive.is)

Steady flow of email traffic continues to the .ML domain, the country identifier for Mali, as a result of people mistyping .MIL, the suffix to all US military email addresses. Control of the .ML domain will revert on Monday to Mali’s government, which is closely allied with Russia.

I'm also in the final stages of sorting out the infrastructure-related formalities. Soon, the situation with the website's...

Domain Knowledge or a lack thereof (2013) (jacquesmattheij.com)

I believe that a lack of domain knowledge is the root cause of a lot of very bad software that gets developed and I think that it is up to computer programmers and their managers to deal with this. Acquiring domain knowledge is an essential component in the development of software that really works well for its users.

EU Member States Still Cannot Agree About End-to-End Encryption (cyberlaw.stanford.edu)

The responses of the 20 member states (or rather, their LEWP representatives) cover a spectrum, from extremely anti-encryption and pro-police powers, to robustly pro-encryption, with quite a few countries occupying a middle ground best described as “encryption is important, but…”.

/kbin update - upvotes, boosts, languages...

Hi everyone, You may have noticed a small change on the website. From now on, upvotes work just like on Lemmy - they are equivalent to Mastodon's "favourite." Not meaning to complain but the boost / favorite switcheroo looked very confusing to me for most of today's morning. But the more I think about it, the more sense it makes for my lazy brain. :)

Great work, thanks!

As of today, June 5th, 2023, a large number of moderators, curators, contributors, and users from around Stack Overflow and the Stack Exchange network are initiating a general moderation strike.

[Rachel Kroll] Feedback: I try to answer "how to become a systems engineer" (rachelbythebay.com)

I think it goes something like this: you start from the assumption that when you see something, you wonder why it is the way it is. Then maybe you observe it and maybe do a little research to figure out how it came to be the thing you see in front of you.
