"There’s standard Silicon Valley hubris in the ‘move fast and break things’ mold, and then there’s whatever this is
"Trying to steamroll one of the most famous movie stars alive, one who is notably not afraid to take Disney to court (and win), and then lying to everyone about it ... well that’s another level altogether.”
He puts into clear terms what had previously been an unarticulated, creeping suspicion I had about #GenAI. Clearly there are many angles from which to come at what's going on with #AI#hype , but I appreciate this one quite a bit.
Earlier this week, Scarlett Johansson released a statement that said she had been approached by OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman to voice a ChatGPT persona. The actress, who famously voiced an AI assistant in the 2013 film "Her," she said no, but OpenAI went ahead and released "Sky" anyway — a chatbot which Johansson herself stated sounded “eerily similar” to her.
The actress has hired legal counsel and demanded an explanation, but could she take it further and does she have a case? @WIRED has spoken to lawyers to find out how this could all play out in court.
So… Big Tech is allowed to blatantly steal the work, styles and therewith the job opportunities of thousands of artists and writers without being reprimanded, but it takes similarity to the voice of a famous actor to spark public outrage about AI. 🤔
Same Sam Altman that Biden tapped for the national AI safety and security board. Said several times a while back that decision was a mistake. Maybe she will sue, seems to be in the right here.
"Scarlett Johansson says OpenAI copied ‘Her’ voice after she said no"
#ScarlettJohansson is threatening #legal action against #OpenAI for copying her #voice for its latest #AI model, GPT-4o, which will be accessible through #ChatGPT.
In a statement provided to The Washington Post by Johansson’s publicist, she claimed that she received an offer from OpenAI CEO #SamAltman in Sept to be the voice of its AI system. Johansson… declined….
“9 months later, my friends, family & the general public all noted how much the newest system named ‘#Sky’ sounded like me. When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered & in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine that my closest friends & news outlets could not tell the difference.
On Sun… #OpenAI suspended the #Sky#voice & posted… how the company trained voices used for the audio capability in its more advanced #AI. The company said it paid #VoiceActors “above top-of-market rates” to participate in recording sessions that were used to produce the voices.
…In her statement, … #ScarlettJohansson said #SamAltman tried to contact her 2 days before the demo. But before they could communicate, OpenAI demonstrated the product, forcing her to take #legal action.
Future AI will be outfitted with an incredible amount of detailed information about its users. In fact, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says it will be like having a “super competent colleague” that knows absolutely everything about your whole life, every email, every conversation you’ve ever had.
