Sometimes in academia, people use the term "open source" to mean that the code is publicly available. To many in the #OSS community, "open source" means a lot more.
What should we call prototype research code that accompanies a paper that is made public?
What should research code include, at bare minimum, when shared publicly? (README, docstrings, requirements..)
What is the minimum to actually make something "open source", beyond just publicly posting?
'The number of retractions issued for research articles in 2023 has passed 10,000 — smashing annual records — as publishers struggle to clean up a slew of sham papers and peer-review fraud.'
Not sure if this happens but there should be a red banner on journal article download pages stating 'retracted'. I don't think most people will check before citing, and there should be alerts in reference management systems too.
A publisher claims to have staff writers to write a book for me, and because I am an unknown author, they will also market the book I did not write for me. All I have to do is loan them my name and suggest a topic.

@jessie is a lover of #languages and helps run #CommonVoice, @mozilla 's open #voice#data set, which now supports over 100 languages. She also teaches #WebDev and loves #hiking. She's awesome you should follow her 🇬🇧

I'm reminded here of @maryrobinette's short story - "Red Rockets" - "She built something better than fireworks. She built community."
Wrote a blog post for Myths and Legends Day on the A to Z main blog. It's about how to find good books on legends and mythology 😊 And what to look for in a good source.
Do you work with #voice or #speech#data? You might contribute data, write data specifications for collection, perform filtering or pre-processing, train #ASR or #TTS models, or design or perform evaluations on #ML speech models.
If so, I’d love your help to understand current #dataset#documentation practices, and what we can do to make them better as part of my #PhD#research
The #survey takes 10-20 minutes to complete, and you can opt in to win one of 3 gift cards valued at $AUD 50 each.

"Duke University has decided to close its herbarium, a collection of 825,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae that was established more than a century ago. The collection, one of the largest and most diverse in the country, has helped scientists map the diversity of plant life and chronicle the impact of humans on the environment.
The university’s decision has left researchers reeling."
"People with Long COVID in Australia have poor health outcomes that are comparable with another emerging disease known as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) …
Quality of life and disability scores were significantly poorer for both Long COVID and ME/CFS when compared with healthy people"
Key finding: spatial analysis reveals value of proximity to schools, with 7.29% decrease on average for each km to the elementary school in the catchment.
Oof, this is not good. Bad incentives damaging the scientific process via easy-to-use AI tools.
“one in fifty papers submitted for publication now come from paper mills”
…
“The barrier to faking has really dropped, because all you have to do is know the right prompts. You do a little bit of tidying up and bam, you’ve got a paper. It’s so quick and it’s much harder to detect because the prose is fluent and original each time.”
If I'm looking to use Docker to assist with making my research reproducible then should I rely on both Dockerfiles and Dockerimages or one or the other? As I understand it, the Dockerfile specifies how the Docker image will be built but an image can contain the scripts, original data, and correctly versioned software / libraries etc. So why not just / always publish the image?
Anyone who is using Visible, an activity tracking platform that's designed for illness, not fitness, can opt-in to share their data with this research study.
Random #research idea while babysitting a #dask process:
I wonder if there's a way to save a bunch of terms of service documents to be able to version them, and show how they have changed over time, particularly in respect to arbitration, copyright and other #datafication processes?
