So, since JoinMastodon.org has decided to change the way servers are listed on their website — showing preference for large servers who do not have a manual review process to join —>

May I ask that you Boost this post so people can find us at https://mstdn.games ? :1up: :boost_ok:

We’re an all-inclusive community and our Local feed is amazing — absolutely the go-to place for all things . Our Mods are top tier.

So I'm following a lot of talented game devs on here, and always enjoy seeing updates of your work.

But I've not found a whole bunch of people making games like mine, and would love to do so.

If anyone is making, or knows someone who is making one of the following, please hit me up!

  • City builders
  • Puzzle games
  • Cozy games
  • Games with a simple low poly art style
  • Minimal takes on a usually complicated genre

(Boosts welcome, thanks)

I was experimenting with colour distances at work today. I need to find out how similar two colours are, so I wrote a little test program and it was surprisingly pretty.

The algorithm is simple:

  1. Fill the canvas with random colours.
  2. Set the first pixel (top left) to red.
  3. For all pixels, find the most similar pixel and move it next to the current pixel.

To determine the similarity, I calculated the 3D distance in the RGB, HSV and YUV color spaces, which brought very different results. Now, it's quite possible that my HSV and YUV conversion functions were just broken, but that's okay.

(I recommend zooming in!)

I'm afraid it's time to look into having save/restore for my #Machiavelli #Fediverse #bot. If you're wondering why I've done everything to do without so far, the answer is (de)serialization.

Hello everyone! This is the very first open test of my blind accessible game engine called Unseen RPG Engine, a niche game engine that allows anyone to easily make turn based RPGs, at least that's the goal! This is very early and the purpose of this is to try and start getting the critical feedback I'll need to make this accessible, usable, and fun. Learn more about it, join the discord community, and download it here! https://ericbomb.itch.io/the-unseen-rpg-engine/devlog/552560/first-demo-of-the-unseen-rpg-engine-is-now-available

It's a common practice in Unity to start the name of a scene, prefab, etc. with an underscore so it will be listed first in the project window.

This is because things are sorted lexicographically and underscores come before letters in ASCII, right?

Well, no.

https://www.asciitable.com/

So what the heck is Unity using to sort things? Did they ... did they really add the underscore as a special case?

Every single time I check Steam I get depressed, but whenever I check Newgrounds it makes me so happy. There is more over there, but these are some of my favorite comments

The sad and broken dev in me is thankful right now ❤️

Surprised anyone still plays anything I ever did. Let alone that they would be so kind to leave comments like that 😊

The game is Firestarter, a Fooly Cooly (FLCL) fan game, and you can play it right here ʕ•ᴥ•ʔノ☆ https://newgrounds.com/portal/view/718022

Today's gamedev protip from someone totally unqualified to be giving such things is this:

Kanban boards and task lists are all well and good, but leaving a very specific next step for your future self at the end of each session makes it a lot quicker to get started next time.

Does anyone here have experience with procedural text generation? I want to implement procedural descriptions for the planets in my game which are not toooo repetitive to read :o I read about Markov chains but I'm not sure how I can incorporate the different planet parameters, features, etc. And I'm also wondering what other methods there are^^

Man I'm so fuckin happy with how the dodges turned out. Took a ton of fighting (you have to set Flying state to get actually fast movement and that's a whole thing), but absolutely worth it.
