Realizing it's been a while since I talked about a #GameDev thing, and it's just because I'm working on weird problems

Still making fun progress though! Finally figured out how to make a character movement component go FAST. Trying to make dodges feel better n stuff.

Moving a bird around my test environment and the strafing speed is maaaaybe a bit fast

A long time ago I told myself never to work on multiple projects at once. One project at a time. I understand that very soon I will finish porting the Erra: Exordium to consoles and will have to look for a new idea. Does anyone work on multiple game projects at the same time?
I heard that some indie solos have this practice, because one project is psychologically exhausting and they switch their attention to another, but I think it's terrible

Hello #mastodon game developers

What is the genre of your game that you are working on or plan to work on?

What do you think makes it unique and why should other people play it?

I've decided to make crippling self-doubt a state like being poisoned rather that a stat. It doesn't make any sense as a stat.

Epic Games Store 📌

Hello #mastodon people!

simple question that I asked a long time ago... let's update the stats

⭐ Do you buy games from the Epic Games Store?

If you bought a couple of games there for the whole time, and mostly buy in other stores, then it is better to count it as - no

The combat is not bad right?

It almooost feels like a real game..!

Made this from scratch in about a week I think :thinkergunsunglasses:

It's just the super basics but I'm just alone spending a few hours per day on it :blobcatgiggle:

Take that Blizzard! :warcraft:

someone created a Godot plugin to open Unity packages and prefabs. this is game changing, just imagine reusing your unity assets to port a game to Godot from Unity. https://www.reddit.com/r/godot/comments/13io0bx/load_unitypackage/

I wonder what delights are on these disks! These arrived with me at the weekend from a game programmer who coded specifically for the #SAMCoupe in the mid-1990s.

My wife @sabcatsilver, a psychology student, created a card game that helps therapists (and people) talk about grief, end of life care, and perspectives on life.

I am soooooo proud of her!! Currently it’s a prototype for class, but she may publish it in the future. Thanks to folks who helped on Mastodon! We got it printed on GameCrafter

omg i didnt know i still had these. all through the 90’s, into the early 2000’s, i was an avid PC Gamer fan (big influence on me wanting to make games). they all had these demo CD’s with latest coolest games. turns out i kept most of them! like 51 CD’s worth of super old games 🤯

So the Dragonsplague mechanic in Dragons Dogma 2 is invisible, (I think) progressive, transmissible between pawns, and can only be cured by killing the pawn

Which leads to a logical conclusion: at the first sign of disobedience, I throw my entire party off the tallest bridge into the ocean #Games #GameDev

This is a still a sm0ll one but there are gonna be some giant cats dominating the game world 🤷

It's December 31, I couldn't close this year without posting a new article on my website. ;)

I wanted to write a recap (and some additional thoughts) on all the work I did building my own game engine called "Ombre" over the past year: https://www.froyok.fr/blog/2023-12-ombre-dev-blog-1/

I'm colour blind, but I've always wanted to have a go at pixel art. Thought of a challenge for myself to draw random D&D monsters in a 4 colour palette. This is a Shrieker - a plant that screams when a bright light or creature is close.

Okay since this worked really well last time, I have another request for advice. I currently focus on and try to get as good as it in as many areas as possible in the time I have. The reason for that is that I got a job where I could learn it and get paid for it. Now when looking at job offerings I find larger companies seem to prefer . Do I assume correctly that I need to chose one and will then kinda be stuck with it? I don't have time to learn two engines.

GameDev problem: the music in our WebGL game on itch.io won't start until the user clicks in the window. Unity claims this is a browser limitation (no autoplay):

https://docs.unity3d.com/Manual/webgl-audio.html

... but the user has already clicked to load and launch the game, so it seems there should be no reason to require another click. I know I've seen WebGL games on itch that don't have this problem.

Does anyone know a workaround?

My 9-year-old son just experienced what every game developer feels. Crying 😂

In Scratch, he was making a game, but accidentally deleted the sprite behind which the code, which he had been creating for a very long time. And he closed the project without returning this action. Lost the code and keeps crying. It is sad and joyful, this is experience baby 👽

how's this feel scale wise? do the walls feel tall enough? does the viewport feel too "zoomed in"?

Unity>Unreal devs: How did you find learning Unreal after a very long time using Unity (version 2!)
How did you find it?

I keep almost making the leap, but stop. Not quite sure why, I've been a dev since 1997 and have done all manner of things.. #Unity #Unreal #Gamedev
