"A team of New York University neuroscientists has now identified a class of neurons -- what it calls "prediction-error neurons" -- that are not responsive to sounds in general, but only respond when sounds violate expectations, thereby sending a message that a mistake has been made.

"Brains are remarkable at detecting what's happening in the world, but they are even better at telling you whether what happened was expected or not," explains David Schneider, an assistant professor in NYU's Center for #NeuralScience and the senior author of the study, which appears in JNeurosci. "We found that there are specific #neurons in the brain that don't tell you what happened, but instead tell you what went wrong." https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2023/10/231006104510.htm

quote:

According to Nothing, their new iMessage app was end-to-end encrypted.

Nothing Chats is built on Sunbird’s platform and all Chats messages are end-to-end encrypted, meaning neither we nor Sunbird can access the messages you’re sending and receiving.
As you may have guessed:

that’s just not true.
To be super clear on how this worked, you gave Nothing your plain text iCloud username and password, they would sign you into iCloud on a Mac mini good knows where, and that Mac would forward your iMessages to Nothing’s app. That’s a lot of trust to put into Nothing, and we found out almost immediately that you should not.

How Conservative Policies and Rhetoric Kill People | The New Republic

"Want to die young? Immerse yourself in conservative media, and vote Republican. Seriously. We should have known, but, still, the science is shocking: When conservatives run governments, suicides and homicides go up; when liberals run governments, suicides and homicides go down.

We got the first clue back in 2002, when, in a 100-year longitudinal study published that year in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Australian researchers found that the suicide rate in that country and the U.K. increased throughout the twentieth century whenever a Conservative government was in power and declined measurably when the Labour Party was in charge.

The BBC picked it up… "When the Conservatives ruled both state and federal governments, men were 17 percent more likely to commit suicide than when Labour was in power. Women were 40 percent more likely to kill themselves.”

"More recently, here in the United States, a 2014 study by Bandy X. Lee, Bruce E. Wexler, and James Gilligan published in the journal Aggression and Violent Behavior found pretty much the same outcomes for periods of Republican versus Democratic rule in our country.

"Arguing that “violence is not random but a problem in public health and preventive medicine,” the researchers were blunt: “Suicide, homicide, and combined suicide/homicide rates from 1900 to 2010 were found to be associated with an increase under Republican presidents and a decrease under Democratic ones with statistical significance.”

"We need to bring back private cars as the cool, sexy, exclusive way to travel, so instead of dumping the carbon budget of a small nation in the global south on private jets, celebrities have to attach their luxury pull an cars to the back of an Amtrak. Then the celebrities will lobby for lines to be better." https://www.tumblr.com/kittydesade/731116496292560896

"hey if you live in the usa i am on my knees begging you to go to benefits.gov and take their quiz to see if you qualify for literally any government benefits at all. the income requirements for some stuff (i.e. SNAP) are actually not quite as low as one might think! the quiz is really straightforward and only took me around 5 minutes to complete. i do recommend a computer over a phone but it works ok on mobile too. it will share so many great resources for you and will show you things even if you only technically meet one eligibility requirement"

"California Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Delete Act yesterday, making it possible for Californians to either ask data brokers to delete their personal data or forbid them to sell or share it, with a single request. Right now, Californians have similar rights under a 2018 state law, but they had to ask each company individually, and that’s a tall order given the almost 500 data brokers operating in the state.

The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) must create a way for people to make this request by January 1st, 2026. The CPPA was established in 2020 by the California Privacy Rights Act.

By August 1st, 2026, data brokers will have to check for and honor new requests every 45 days. " https://www.theverge.com/2023/10/11/23912548/california-delete-act-personal-data-single-request-online-data-brokers

"There was a time most American cities almost never saw a blue sky. Brown and yellow smog was the norm and rivers were garbage sludge that are now teeming with fish. People don't know that government #environmental regulation actually did succeed, that the #EPA really worked as intended. Now it gets eroded because people think it isn't making a big difference, and they think that because they haven't seen what it's still holding back." https://www.tumblr.com/prismatic-bell/731116294401884160/the-cuyahoga-river-caught-fire-at-least-a-dozen

"Francis Ford Coppola is the perfect storyteller to tell this story. Who better than a mature filmmaker who has spent a lifetime watching the world change around him, to combine history, science fiction, and humanity?

"Even if you discount that argument, think about this: Coppola believes in this project. I’m serious, he’s been working on Megalopolis since 1979 – literally our entire lives, in many cases. ‘Actively started developing it in 1983, it underwent significant delays and numerous cancellations over the years, until Coppola revived the project in 2019 by spending $120 million of his own money on the film.” Coppola plans for Megalopolis to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it is set to premiere on May 17, 2024"

"Google quietly added something else to its results—a “Web” filter that presents what Google used to look like a decade ago, no extra junk. While Google made its AI-focused changes known on its biggest stage—during its Google I/O event—the Web filter was curiously announced on Twitter by Search Liaison Danny Sullivan."

"Based on data gleaned from the nearly 10 million military dependents it insures, the U.S. Department of Defense has repeatedly called the evidence supporting ABA “weak,” noting there is no research to determine whether the small number of participants who show improvement — 15% — do so because of treatment or simply because a child has matured. After a year of the therapy, the department reported to Congress in 2019, 76% of 16,000 participating autistic children saw no change, and 9% worsened."

"Honestly, this whole article is a gem. Remember, while "water is wet" studies seem trivial, we need them in order to get our side of the story taken seriously. Research with credible data that backs up what we've been saying is important! "

Raskin targets Trump-style foreign payments with emoluments legislation | The Hill

"“Although we have not needed to develop a full-blown legislative machinery to enforce the Emoluments Clause for more than two centuries, Congress must now enact a law to prevent presidents from ever again exploiting the presidency for self-enrichment by selling out our government to foreign states,” he said in a statement.

He added that foreign governments “were seeking to obtain, and often got, specific policy favors from [Trump’s] White House.” https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4678366-raskin-targets-trump-foreign-payments-with-emoluments-legislation/

Chocolate made with fewer calories, less waste | Ars Technica

"Chocolate is traditionally made by mixing dried, roasted, and ground fermented cocoa beans to make cocoa mass. The cocoa mass is then mixed with refined sugar, usually from sugar beets. Instead of sugar, this new Swiss whole fruit chocolate uses the pulp surrounding the cocoa beans along with the inner rind of the cocoa pod husk to make a cocoa gel. When mixed with cocoa mass, this produces chocolate that is higher in fiber and lower in saturated fat than conventional chocolate."

No, Most Books Don't Sell Only a Dozen Copies

"Here is what I found. Collectively, 45,571 unique ISBNs appear for these publishers in our frontlist sales data for the last 52 weeks (thru week ending 8-24-2022).

In this dataset:

>>>0.4% or 163 books sold 100,000 copies or more

>>>0.7% or 320 books sold between 50,000-99,999 copies

>>>2.2% or 1,015 books sold between 20,000-49,999 copies

>>>3.4% or 1,572 books sold between 10,000-19,999 copies

>>>5.5% or 2,518 books sold between 5,000-9,999 copies

>>>21.6% or 9,863 books sold between 1,000-4,999 copies

>>>51.4% or 23,419 sold between 12-999 copies

>>>14.7% or 6,701 books sold under 12 copies

So, only about 15% of all of those publisher-produced frontlist books sold less than 12 copies. …

BUT, I think the real story is that roughly 66% of those books from the top 10 publishers sold less than 1,000 copies over 52 weeks. (Those last two points combined)"
