Here's your periodic reminder about how cursed Japanese wiring is.

This is an official, standard Apple power cable that shipped with a MacBook.

I found the network rack gacha! Assumed it was so niche it would only be found in like Tokyo but there was one around my neck of the woods as well.

This is the cutest thing ever! Look at the little cables and cable management hoops, the PDU, all of it is so well-done!

This is going to help scammers a lot. Imagine getting a call from your loved ones, and they explain they are in trouble and need immediate financial assistance. This is going to affect so many elderly and innocent people. OpenAI is developing these tools again from publicly scrapping of your voice samples.

The GlobalTalk Chat Stack 0.2.0 is released! The preferred HyperCard-based multi-user chat system for the network.

I've added text escaping courtesy of @uliwitness so you can now type quotation marks without breaking it!

I've also made usernames bold in the chat log, and added a "emoji" feature where you can tack a single character from Susan Kare's classic Taliesin or Cairo fonts to a message.

My HARD OFF Megathread!

HARD OFF is my favorite store ever. It’s a Japanese chain of tech thrift stores that will buy your junk and resell it. There’s also OFF HOUSE (clothes/household items), the confusingly unrelated BOOK OFF (used books, games and other media), LIQUOR OFF, etc

I’ll start off by posting some overview photos of what kind of stuff you can find there, and then start following up whenever I find something interesting

Let’s go!

My wife got our kids the Blu-ray of the Studio Ghibli anime 耳をすませば/Whisper of the Heart, which heavily features the Japanese version of "Take Me Home, Country Road", which of course the kids instantly latched onto.

I've been slowly trying to ween them onto the proper version of the song (not much luck so far) https://youtu.be/H4JWxOWWsvs

I bought the -C to adapter that they claim provides support for "charging, data and audio” on iPhone and iPads with USB-C.

Awaiting the new , meanwhile put it to the test on a Pro M1 to see if I could get anything to work!

Works:
• Audio accessories
• Charging (albeit really slowly…)

Doesn't work:
• USB drives or SD card adapters
• Ethernet devices (these work on iPhone!)
• Video adapters (did not expect this to work!)

2: The Email System

Been seeing some talk about AppleTalk email on fedi lately so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring

MacMail, a client/server AppleTalk email system written in HyperCard. It has no gateway to internet email, it's purely LAN

There is a server that you leave running on a Mac which stores incoming email for the clients to fetch when they go online. And a remote app which is required to admin that server

Two windows, MacMail Server and MacMail Remote, each with a list of users, but Remote has actions like Add and Remove.

#Sonoma is now officially the buggiest version of #macOS/X I’ve ever installed I think, worse than Mavericks (which had to be rebooted weekly) and El Cap (which bricked my install on update and needed a clean install)

I just opened my bag to a burning hot machine with the screen lit full brightness on the Lock Screen with that video animation playing, and no response trying to unlock it in any way

In over a decade I have not once experienced “hot laptop in bag” syndrome with a Mac, until now

I managed to get the global AppleTalk network working! Neato!!

If anyone wants to add me, “kalleboo.com” as a Host ID. But I will be shutting it down later when I go to bed, don’t quite trust leaving this old machine on 24/7

Muting the word "eclipse" now since according to a calculator I checked I'll never see one in my life so it is irrelevant to me.

But not before leaving my favorite bash.org joke (paraphrased):

A> When does the eclipse start?
B> Three minutes after your launch it, fucking Java

AIRConfig for #GlobalTalk version 0.4 is now released! #MARCHintosh

Version 0.4 adds:

  • A redesigned GUI that resembles the familiar Font/DA Mover
  • It remembers your last used files so you don't have to re-select them each time. (via aliases so AppleTalk shares will be auto-mounted)
  • A “Headless Mode” that will do the conversion on launch and then instantly quit

So point it at the auto-updated Host ID list on PurrTopia, set it to Headless mode, and use QuicKeys or something to automate it!

AIRConfig for #GlobalTalk 0.1 is now available for testing by the few brave pioneers among you!

Please tell me if it works or not! The way I detect which config is the IPTunnel one is kind of guesswork and it might end up clobbering other configs instead.

Source code is also provided if anyone is curious (this is the first Mac Toolbox program I've written so it's not going to be exemplary code…)

AIRConfig for #GlobalTalk 0.2 is now released.

  • Fixes an off-by-one bug that caused the last address to be missing (and technically the resource was corrupt, thanks to @europlus europlus.zone for detecting this with his TMPL)

  • Adds an actual UI.

You can find it on the Blackbird share on BaroNet.

@scj mastodon.social has also helpfully set up an auto-updating Host IDs file on PurrTopia anyone can use. I put an alias to it next to the application.

So this MessagePad 130 showed up on PayPay Fleamarket for $45. Never seen a Newton go for this cheap in Japan (even with massive a black screen burn spot), and they're rare to show up to begin with.

The photos didn't show the screen, but revealed some bad battery leakage (which was also disclosed in the description), but I figured at least it could be used for parts (my pen on my 120 has lost it's end cap!)

It arrived today so let's see what we got!

I gave the battery contacts a quick wipe down with vinegar, and..

It runs!!! Success!! My first Newton OS 2.0 device.

There’s still a bunch of corrosion in the battery contacts though since I can’t get in behind them, I’m going to want to remove it and leave it in a vinegar bath overnight or something.

Does anyone have any hints on removing the battery contacts to clean them? Are they soldered to the logic board or something?
