My HARD OFF Megathread!

HARD OFF is my favorite store ever. It’s a Japanese chain of tech thrift stores that will buy your junk and resell it. There’s also OFF HOUSE (clothes/household items), the confusingly unrelated BOOK OFF (used books, games and other media), LIQUOR OFF, etc

I’ll start off by posting some overview photos of what kind of stuff you can find there, and then start following up whenever I find something interesting

Let’s go!

I found the network rack gacha! Assumed it was so niche it would only be found in like Tokyo but there was one around my neck of the woods as well.

This is the cutest thing ever! Look at the little cables and cable management hoops, the PDU, all of it is so well-done!

My 3 feature requests for @MonaApp

  1. Option for a dialog to warn you if you’re about to post a picture with no description entered

  2. Option to make custom emoji bigger. Right now they’re tiny and I can’t make them out (are they designed for 1x PC displays and being rendered at retina scale or are they actually supposed to be this small?)

  3. Always load the whole timeline instead of having “load more” buttons. Timeline sync seems wonky for me the with inconsistent loading

1: The Monopoly Clone

When @billgoats posted about one of his old HyperCard network chat attempts I was reminded my my old Stacks that used AppleTalk

The dates on all these files have been clobbered so this was some time in the late 90's, before I turned 15

It's a Monopoly clone I made with shops from the Swedish village I lived in at the time. It has purchasable land, chance cards and a "lottery" version of jail

Our eldest daughter is starting elementary school in in April and we have to submit bank details for a direct debit for school fees

The debit system used is some local thing only supported by the local banks, and the application is done on paper.

There's a pre-filled out section for how the school is going to submit the debits with the options for

  • Paper ledger
  • Floppy Disk
  • Magneto-optical
  • DVD
  • Data transmission

I'm sad to say my daughters school did not choose floppy disk 😢

magine it's 1997 and you're a Japanese businessman. You're traveling the country for work, and want to update your personal web page with photos of interesting things you see. You have an early digital camera you bought, and you have your work-issued PDA, but obviously without a PC such a multimedia task can't be completed? You're going to have to wait until your get back home...

A quick question to our resident HyperCard gurus - I have a button I only want to enable when the user is editing a certain text field, but setting the disabled on the button inside of openField dm then deselects the field again instantly. Trying to remember the selection and reselect again afterwards also doesn’t seem to be working for me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

So this #Newton MessagePad 130 showed up on PayPay Fleamarket for $45. Never seen a Newton go for this cheap in Japan (even with massive a black screen burn spot), and they're rare to show up to begin with.

The photos didn't show the screen, but revealed some bad battery leakage (which was also disclosed in the description), but I figured at least it could be used for parts (my pen on my 120 has lost it's end cap!)

It arrived today so let's see what we got!

I bought the -C to adapter that they claim provides support for "charging, data and audio” on iPhone and iPads with USB-C.

Awaiting the new , meanwhile put it to the test on a Pro M1 to see if I could get anything to work!

Works:
• Audio accessories
• Charging (albeit really slowly…)

Doesn't work:
• USB drives or SD card adapters
• Ethernet devices (these work on iPhone!)
• Video adapters (did not expect this to work!)

The Sonoma Finder adds a progress bar when copying files to/from an iPhone?!!? After all these years?!?! OK this makes all the bugginess of the rest of the OS worth it.

The camera app I work on just added a feature to shoot still photos direct to a USB-C drive on the new iPhones, bypassing your Photo Library

I thought it would be funny to try to recreate a Mavica using a USB Floppy drive. Now I know that normally they don’t work on iPhones because they use a subclass called UFI (USB Floppy Interface)

But how about a SuperDisk drive? Those supported 120 MB disks, maybe the use the main profile?

Sadly that didn’t work either, my experiment was a failure :(

Can everyone still selling hardware with microUSB ports please quit it, as of yesterday?

This also goes for all of you German hardware hackers who are still obsessed with miniUSB for some reason.

A product I wished existed: A small DC UPS

Basically build the guts of a USB-C mobile battery and give it some more trickle charging and input switching smarts so I can use it to replace the power brick for my router, an IP camera or anything that runs off a 5V/7.5V/12V DC barrel jack and makes it stay up over short (<1hr) power outages.

All the UPSes out there are stone-age lead-acid battery things or big heavy expensive 120V AC Jackery-type devices

2: The Email System

Been seeing some talk about AppleTalk email on fedi lately so I thought I'd throw my hat into the ring

MacMail, a client/server AppleTalk email system written in HyperCard. It has no gateway to internet email, it's purely LAN

There is a server that you leave running on a Mac which stores incoming email for the clients to fetch when they go online. And a remote app which is required to admin that server

Two windows, MacMail Server and MacMail Remote, each with a list of users, but Remote has actions like Add and Remove.

I managed to get the global AppleTalk network working! Neato!!

If anyone wants to add me, “kalleboo.com” as a Host ID. But I will be shutting it down later when I go to bed, don’t quite trust leaving this old machine on 24/7

Me and @scj have been debugging an issue with AIRConfig for , and at the current stage it looks like the actual problem is not AIRConfig, but MacTCP/System 7.1

The problem manifests itself with a long run of “The host name [] is unknown” errors in the Router Log window when starting up the router

It appears this happens when trying to resolve too many domains with CNAMEs in a row. (1/3)
