It must be a tiny minority of iPhone users who have any idea what this β€œQ” logo is that shows up when they open an audio file on the web or in full screen

So this #Newton MessagePad 130 showed up on PayPay Fleamarket for $45. Never seen a Newton go for this cheap in Japan (even with massive a black screen burn spot), and they're rare to show up to begin with.

The photos didn't show the screen, but revealed some bad battery leakage (which was also disclosed in the description), but I figured at least it could be used for parts (my pen on my 120 has lost it's end cap!)

It arrived today so let's see what we got!

I was messing around with my network today and spotted something funny - the Ubiquiti UniFi dashboard will actually by default classify Apple Internet Router/AURP in it’s traffic logs and even has a little custom icon for it!

So here’s the chart of the #GlobalTalk traffic my router saw over #MARCHintosh

I took some photos of the fireworks tonight and they kinda look like sky fire daemons with eyes

A large golden firework with two small purple fireworks inside it with what almost looks like shocks coming out of them

Muting the word "eclipse" now since according to a calculator I checked I'll never see one in my life so it is irrelevant to me.

But not before leaving my favorite bash.org joke (paraphrased):

A> When does the eclipse start?
B> Three minutes after your launch it, fucking Java

Jon Stewart: β€œ[Apple] wouldn't let us do even that dumb thing we just did in the first act on AI. Like, what is that sensitivity? Why are they so afraid to even have these conversations out in the public sphere?"

Tech giants should not be producing content. We need the 1948 breakup of the Studio System again. https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/112200019732650765

AIRConfig for #GlobalTalk version 0.4 is now released! #MARCHintosh

Version 0.4 adds:

  • A redesigned GUI that resembles the familiar Font/DA Mover
  • It remembers your last used files so you don't have to re-select them each time. (via aliases so AppleTalk shares will be auto-mounted)
  • A β€œHeadless Mode” that will do the conversion on launch and then instantly quit

So point it at the auto-updated Host ID list on PurrTopia, set it to Headless mode, and use QuicKeys or something to automate it!

Me and @scj have been debugging an issue with AIRConfig for , and at the current stage it looks like the actual problem is not AIRConfig, but MacTCP/System 7.1

The problem manifests itself with a long run of β€œThe host name [] is unknown” errors in the Router Log window when starting up the router

It appears this happens when trying to resolve too many domains with CNAMEs in a row. (1/3)

Doing screen recordings of my G4 for #MARCHintosh I need to keep switching between a monitor and a capture input, and in doing so eventually I managed to bend a VGA pin

I want to strangle all those people who post memes about how USB-C is so terrible and old β€œchonky" ports are somehow superior.

We have it so good these days, the old standards sucked!!

So here’s an obscure one for #MARCHintosh and since there are some Apple old-timers around here I was wondering if anyone had heard of these before

Apparently a bunch of support calls (crank calls,"dumb" customers, angry customers) to Apple+Claris from the early-mid 90's were passed around

The only place I've seen them are on this CD-ROM from the Swedish web publication "Macpower" (started by ex-MacWorld SE writer Martin Lindhe)

Anyone know the story behind these?

AIRConfig for #GlobalTalk 0.1 is now available for testing by the few brave pioneers among you!

Please tell me if it works or not! The way I detect which config is the IPTunnel one is kind of guesswork and it might end up clobbering other configs instead.

Source code is also provided if anyone is curious (this is the first Mac Toolbox program I've written so it's not going to be exemplary code…)

Introducing the AppleWideWeb!

Most of you may already know that was a big influence on Tim Berners-Lee when he created the WWW. We are told that HyperCard missed its chance since it wasn't networked. Without support for connecting up a global network of HyperCard Stacks, it had no chance against the WWW.

Well that was then and this is now. In 2024 we DO have a global AppleTalk network to publish HyperCard Stacks on - ! The dream is finally a reality!

A quick question to our resident HyperCard gurus - I have a button I only want to enable when the user is editing a certain text field, but setting the disabled on the button inside of openField dm then deselects the field again instantly. Trying to remember the selection and reselect again afterwards also doesn’t seem to be working for me. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

The GlobalTalk Chat Stack 0.2.0 is released! The preferred HyperCard-based multi-user chat system for the network.

I've added text escaping courtesy of @uliwitness so you can now type quotation marks without breaking it!

I've also made usernames bold in the chat log, and added a "emoji" feature where you can tack a single character from Susan Kare's classic Taliesin or Cairo fonts to a message.

For people with trouble mounting the β€œRouter IP Extension” disk imagefor #MARCHintosh #GlobalTalk (that is supplied in a zip file for some unholy reason), here are some other uploads:

A stuffed copy of the disk image in a mountable state (with the right type/creator code) https://kalleboo.com/linked/RouterIPExtension.dsk.sit

And a stuffed copy of the contents of the disk (the installer, but the extension is just a file on the disk as well if you scroll down) https://kalleboo.com/linked/RouterIPExtension.sit

Something that might be fun to test on #GlobalTalk for #MARCHintosh is MandelNet, an AppleTalk distributed Mandelbrot fractal renderer.

I've put it in the "stuff to try" folder on my "Blackbird" share.
