Remember the time that Bell Atlantic screwed up union negotiations so bad that they thought they could change their name and everyone would forget?

Of course not, because it worked. That’s Verizon now

The boss has been pestering me to attend a leadership conference so I, completely jokingly, said, "A true leader would never sit in an audience being told what to do" and now half this office is in existential crisis

If I have a Python package which contains a module whose contents define external boundaries and are all themselves objects with no implementation — typing.Protocols, constants, enums, interfaces, actually-abstract ABCs, type aliases, maybe exceptions — what is a good name for this namespace?

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@glyph when i’m not sure what to name something, i think “don’t tell me what it’s made of, tell me what it does”. Protocol is a python term of art here, and boundary feels fuzzy, so interfaces feels right to me

What kind of person gets online to confidently tell people it's "unfair to algorithms" to say that only humans can be creative

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@thomasfuchs Because they use algorithms to do “creative work”. So by telling them the tool is not creative, you’re telling them that they are not creative. Which is true, but they take it as a personal insult. Which it is

@gsuberland @NanoRaptor @tubetime @ke8smq I'd like to try the lemon wedge wrapped around a gold brick, but I can't remember if you rim it with potassium iodide first, or snort the potassium iodide afterwards. The scene in Caddyshack has me all mixed up

    I need to design a tool to automatically measure how difficult a programming task was, by monitoring how many new tabs I open while doing it.

    that last thing with the decoding some 3des/base64 JSON files was like a 15-tabber, but most of that was just unfamiliarity with openssl and C#

    Good God. He wants $7 trillion to build an AI-driven biz. That is more than Microsoft & Google (throw in their Apple, too) market cap. What does this tell us? It is just not sustainable. It has a high cost. The craziness of replacing human labor with machines is priceless, tho. I now ask if this AI buzz can cure cancer and other critical illnesses. Can this free everyone to do art or travel and provide free housing and healthcare via UBI? This is pure madness.

    @nixCraft In one of the shareholder letters, William Buffett notes that all of the gold i. the world would make a 67-foot cube valued at 9.6 trillion dollars. You could buy all the farmland in the US, Exxon-Mobil, and still be a trillionaire

    wait a fucking second: This smartphone has a FLIR camera built in, and also the GPS has broken so that it doesn't work while you're in motion. This isn't a hardware failure, this is a software bug they delivered in an update.
