It was only just now I realized venv and pyenv are two different programs and I am experiencing distress

@mcc and pyenv also has a plugin which manages virtualenvs… and I hate it

If I could switch posts from private to public after posting them, that’s probably how I’d draft a lot of threads. For me, the chunks of a thread are a writing aid. Are there writing apps anyone can recommend that kind of replicate that experience, of writing an essay one post at a time?

@misc @Kevin creativity through constraints or high stakes? If we agonize and refine we never get anything done, so we take one breath and just do.

Are you looking for an approach to bottle the lightning without burning down the forest by dialing down the stakes and the blast radius and if you feel you’ve caught the moment push it out to the world in a way that is quick and final and prevents second guessing. Or maybe thinking such an approach would work could snuff out the spark.

The why of the tool feels more important than the how. I’ve tried to trick myself into doing something but I always get wise in the end. (Shot from the hip, I feel the struggle)

So I've got this mac now, plugged into a KVM with my "real" computer, and I keep switching over to the Mac, starting very large downloads, and then KVMing back to Windows. And then later when I return to the mac I discover the download failed partway through. This has happened like 3 times. WTF could be happening? Is the mac going to sleep? How do I make it stop? All the useful options appear to have been removed from the Energy Saver control panel:

@mcc Alternative: try iterm2 instead of stock Terminal.app and set that to bash. It’s very nice. You can keep Terminal on the default shell if the grenade goes off

I think LinkedIn is not a very good name for a product because it took me many years after Linkedln first appeared before I was entirely certain whether the letter after the d is an uppercase i or a lowercase L

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@mcc There exists in such a case a certain a small line or stroke regularly attached to the end of a larger stroke in a letter or symbol; let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a serif erected upon a character. The more modern type reformer goes happily up to it and says, “I don’t see the use of this; let us clear it away.” To which the more intelligent type reformer will do well to answer: “If you don’t see the use of it, I certainly won’t let you clear it away. Go away and think. Then, when you can come back and tell me that you do see the use of it, I may allow you to destroy it.”

I guess my version of “I won’t eat the bugs” is “ I won’t program in Python”. I would sooner go back to php. To Perl. Visual Basic. Excel formulas. JavaScript itself.

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@nil @hugoestr my experience is python has a learning curve that is so gentle that for every step of the journey you think you’ve reached the top. It’s Excel. Its a computer science participation trophy. Nobody thinks that they write bad python, but everybody writes bad python. If I wrote good python, it would be Pascal

One of the many ideas in Vinge's "A Fire Upon the Deep" is that there's a future academic discipline devoted to figuring out ways to rebuild civilizations after they crash, because with millions of inhabited worlds that happens often enough to be worth studying. (And yes, it's a riff on the tech trees of 4X-style games.) #sdxpy 1/4

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@gvwilson we are very much on a golden path: UNIX, C, and the Internetwork Protocol won the war. Everything now derives from that or is an interesting pet simulation running on that foundation. Does ontogeny recapitulate phylogeny? Put yourself in the shoes of a malevolent artificial intelligence with time travel capabilities… how far back do you go to ensure your ascendancy? Whose terminal will be the beachhead of your temporal invasion?

This should exist: A #pico8 but for the #transputer where you can specify how many 16bit processors you want up to 42. Maybe as part of a meta game you can unlock processors as you learn new #CSP concepts. #sigilmagick

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@nil A PICO-8, of sorts, might be the TIS-100. Rather than a parallel machine for games, a parallel machine that is the game: https://www.zachtronics.com/tis-100/

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@nil definitely fertile ground for… something, another what-if is the Parallela dev board: https://parallella.org/board/

Zachtronics games have a funny way of getting under my skin; sometime
in EXAPUNKS I finally grokked UNIX syscalls in their fullness

Let's try something.

Ask me anything about Medley Interlisp, the seminal software development environment of Xerox Lisp Machines developed at PARC since the 1980s. Ask about how to learn and use it, its history and revival, and more.

What are my qualifications? None, mostly.

But I'm a passionate user. For the past 6 months I've been using the system daily, reading nearly all existing documentation and publications, doing coding projects, and poking around.

@amoroso Smalltalk-80 had a beautiful, seminal series of books like the Blue Book. Have you found anything in Interlisp in the way of books or papers that are essential reading?

Can we please for the love of god stop collectively pretending Adderall isn’t meth?

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@codinghorror and you say this based on your personal experience of people who talk too much

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@codinghorror So you’re saying that the increase in prescriptions is preliminary fraudulent and not, say, due to more valid diagnoses. Look at the prevalence of left handed news over the last 100 years.

Granting that as valid, have you considered why Adderall is prescribed more than certain other drugs like lisdexamfetamine AKA Vyvanse?

Because the safer alternatives are more expensive than adderall. Health insurance won’t cover it so either you have the money for the safer stuff or you are stuck taking the more dangerous stuff. And your policy suggestion of “make it harder to get the stuff” will disproportionately affect lower income sufferers… who without a reliable source just might get poorer due to, you know, a condition that affects executive function.

And you led into this with “I think people who talk to me too much are abusing baby meth.”

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@codinghorror admitted that they are on Adderall for ADHD? Or that they don’t have a diagnosis and are abusing a prescription medication because it’s so easily available?

flyingsaceur,
@flyingsaceur@ioc.exchange avatar

@codinghorror if you had framed the discussion with your own personal experience, we would all be having a much better conversation.

You seem to have done an XY Problem with drug addiction, pharmacology, and public policy. And leading in with observational comedy is not a good look. Read the room, man
