Copaganda is heavy around here this week after a coupla cops kicked the bucket. So here’s your regular reminder what the most dangerous professions in the US are… note what is NOT on the list

dan613,
@dan613@ottawa.place avatar

@riotmuffin Black mothers had a death rate of 69.9 deaths per 100k live births in 2021, just above logging, making it the 2nd most dangerous activity. White women, in contrast, had a death rate of 26.6, just above steel workers. But also, defund the police.

How do N95 masks catch particles that are smaller than the holes?

  1. Particles are sticky because of static forces
  2. Large particle go straight until they hit a mask layer
    Tiny particles get knocked around by molecules until they hit a fibre
  3. Fibres are given an electric charge so that they attract all particles

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

dan613,
@dan613@ottawa.place avatar

@AnhedoniaIsReal @RickiTarr I'm retired, and while I was single I forced myself to go out just to be around people and talk to staff at a restaurant or bar. I could tell my brain was going wonky when I hadn't spoken a word for 2 weeks. I wasn't particularly lonelier than normal, though.

Y'all I just made myself feel so old, hubs looked up top 100 music from 2001, 2011, 2021, and today and the amount of music I could recognize decreased by significantly. I recognized probably 70% of 2001 and decreasing as I went on. BUT I blame the internet, I can listen to exactly the kind of music I want with no dependence on the radio, but also I'm old!

@Yorkshiregeek @RickiTarr The stuff that was popular when we were kids often had a short shelf life. Think about the ones we still listen to, and you can't be blamed for not liking most of what is popular today.

I was just thinking back to the mental health screening I had earlier last week with a psychiatric nurse. It just broke my heart to see how overworked she was. Working through lunch, then giving me a callback after 6 PM. Ontario's premier Doug Ford is purposefully making her life miserable so he can show a balanced budget, while lavishing hundreds of millions on land speculators and alcohol purveyors.

I wish I knew how to get through to non-voters that elections are important.

One afternoon when I was a young lad in Prince George, our neighbour’s house caught fire. Dad said the neighbour’s son was home alone, and he saw him bring buckets of water from outside into the basement.

Dad called the fire department when he saw the smoke, and rushed us across the street, where we waited anxiously for signs the fire might spread to our house. Fortunately it was put out in time.

Anyway, if you wonder why I frequently boost US political news…

In his rally speech, Pierre #Poilievre promised he's "going to bring home" a "new & better" Canada that sounds like an imaginary 'Leave it to Beaver' episode.

"Children skipping to school without fearing for their safety. Seniors waving at friendly shop keepers. Parents calling their road hockey playing kids to bed. A young couple sitting on the porch, soaking in the warm evening air with a Canadian flag gently hanging from the front door of their brand new home."

If you have only basic cooking skills like myself, you may not know that there are TWO kinds of cocoa. The first is baking cocoa that you see in the baking aisle. It is naturally alkaline and works with baking soda to make cakes rise.

The second is dutched cocoa, which has been processed to make it neutral. It is a bit more mellow in flavour and darker in colour. Most importantly, it dissolves in hot water more easily. If you make your own hot chocolate powder, dutched chocolate is what you need. It is also nice for powdering desserts and icing.

It might be a challenge to find it if you don't have a well-stocked grocery, but you can get it online, eg https://camino.ca/products/baking-products/cocoa-powders/dutch-processed-unsweetened-cocoa-powder-97-cacao/, but Bulk Barn in Ontario has a bulk bin of it.

If you are thinking of trying mushroom (mycelial) leather for yourself, this paper (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/research-directions-biotechnology-design/article/growing-mycelium-leather-a-paste-substrate-approach-with-posttreatments/8B0BAD4C1481BDE26583408B4FAA9D13) has most of the steps you need. However the tensile strength is quite low, being around 1 N/cm², with cow leather being around 800 N/cm².

Another approach is bacterial cellulose, using bacteria found in kombucha. Adding mushroom protein and processing with glycerol gave similar results to leather. https://www.researchgate.net/journal/Cellulose-1572-882X/publication/349108621_Comparative_study_on_the_physical_entrapment_of_soy_and_mushroom_proteins_on_the_durability_of_bacterial_cellulose_bio-leather/links/6020cf4d92851c4ed557992d/Comparative-study-on-the-physical-entrapment-of-soy-and-mushroom-proteins-on-the-durability-of-bacterial-cellulose-bio-leather.pdf

I haven't seen studies on using a fabric mesh (cotton, linen, or hemp) to improve strength.

Thanks to @deborahh and @richard for the original posts.

This is a neat trick: recycle steel and cement at the same time using renewable energy. The cement acts as slag on top of the molten steel to prevent it from reacting with oxygen in the air. The cement can then be reused. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cxee01m5yero

    @grivettcarnac I don't see who would do better. Remember that most Canadians aren't politically active, and Trudeau has done very little campaigning. He does very well at town halls, even though conservatives are allowed to ask questions. Many thought he beat Harper in the debates, and Poilievre is no Harper.
