*@courtcan @RickiTarr @elverkonge Homeschooling is an advantage for a small number of students; it puts most at a serious disadvantage. My observation is that far too many parents who choose to home school do not have the education and perseverance to successfully guide their children.

Disclosure: I am a retired 7-12 science teacher (with a mother who taught HS English, and with six yrs of grad study in humanities).

@RickiTarr I went to a public HS, with 400/grade. My life was science and music. Most of my friends were same, plus debate. Loved HS, hated jr. high, where I was bullied every day for 3yrs, as was my older sister. She still has emotional scars.

@mattsheffield McConnell ENABLED Trump. He had the power, at nearly every juncture, to stop Trump. Instead he gave tacit approval to the worst of Trump, and active approval when it served McC's aims.

With a 6-3 SCOTUS, the damage McConnell has wreaked upon us will last for decades. Any of the current justices could stay on the court another 10+ years. Barrett could remain for 30 years.

@atomicpoet Somewhat off-topic, but one of my mutuals on TikTok is a woman mechanical engineer, who worked as a machinist & mechanic to put herself thru college as a single mom. Many of her videos she has black hands from working on automotive engines. Nor sure if she would do acting/rom-coms, but I'd watch if she did!

When I visit my physician, not a mask in sight, other than the one I am wearing. Vaccination rate in my county is extremely low—less than 20% Non-vaccination rate correlates with Trump voter rate, which was about 85%. Quite a few of these are former students (or their parents or siblings). I TAUGHT SCIENCE!! I feel like a failure.

@thepoliticalcat Yup, I'm old enough that I have had at least THREE rounds of polio vaccine (Salk, Sabin, Salk2, etc.) plus boosters over the years. Since I spent a few years in Taiwan in the 1970s, I've also had shots for Yellow Fever, Typhoid, Typhus, Cholera, and a zillion gamma globulins. I had measles, rubella, mumps and chicken pox as a kid, but I got an MMR shot a couple of years ago--just to be cautious. I've had SEVEN Covid shots, flu shot every year for the past 15, and RSV this year.

@thepoliticalcat My parents were ultra-paranoid about polio in the early 1950s; one of Mom's best friends spent her adult life in a wheelchair as a result of polio. Remember very well the fear.

@msquebanh @thepoliticalcat We always heard how the Sabin (live) vaccine was better than the Salk (killed) vaccine, but time has vindicated the Salk vaccine. Vaccine-induced illness from Salk is close to zero.

    My wife’s sister and her husband were in TelAviv when the bombing began. The had open tickets to leave on El Al; they went to Rome yesterday (Sunday 10/8/23). They were very fortunate; they were in Egypt a week ago.
