Not sure what to make of this - I only have standard tracking protection on, and this has only cropped up in recent days. Not shared as drama, more as a perplexing technical development.

@jasonwilson Twitter just rolled out the X dot com URL for web clients. I presume that's what this is.

Joe Biden won all of the debates he had with Trump in 2020 but somehow media people are pretending Trump is good at debating.

In reality, Trump is a crybaby narcissist who spirals into childish rage at the slightest confrontation.

He cowered from multiple debates in 2016 because he couldn't respond to tough questions. He was terrified of debating his Republican challengers in 2024. He also choked against Hillary Clinton in 2016.

@dan613 @Savvyhomestead Indeed! He slurs his words constantly, forgets his train of thought, and frequently gives up trying to pronounce difficult words.

There is no such thing as the "culture war." What we're actually talking about is white evangelicals trying to cheat at politics rather than accept that Americans long ago rejected their authoritarian and superstitious viewpoints.

This is blindingly obvious on the issue of and https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/

RFK Jr's black voter engagement director Angela Stanton King admits her goal is to help "our guy" Donald Trump by tricking black people into throwing their vote away.

"I love Trump... I don't want to just give it over to Joe Biden... we know that it's us against the Democrats."

After ending national abortion rights, the Christian fascists have been targeting birth control and pornography.

Ben Carson has signaled the next challenge: no-fault divorce.

They'll also go for extramarital and same-sex intimacy as well.

@samiamsam According to the Christian Right, they do not have freedom unless they can force others to abide by their religious dogmas.

@gentrifiedrose She has a duty to obey and submit according to the doctrine. And it does indeed say that in the Bible.

mattsheffield,

@gentrifiedrose And according to these people, if they cannot force their beliefs on others then they are being oppressed. This is not me exaggerating either!

mattsheffield,

@gentrifiedrose That's the one part of the Bible that Trump actually wants to obey

Everyone in Republican politics is showing up at Trump's NYC criminal trial -- but not his own family. Probably the biggest revelation of the case so far. https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/14/politics/trump-allies-courthouse-appearances/index.html

Most news companies I've seen are vastly overstaffed with single-skilled executives and middle managers who produce nothing, not even memos. They also waste enormous sums of money on overpriced tech from Fastly and Amazon, etc.

Poor leadership is the main reason news is hurting.

@freeformz Managers don't have to succeed at making the product, they only have to succeed at making their boss think they succeeded.

And HR certainly hasn't understood tech hiring from the very beginning, so whether they build shoddy products from AI or from terrible leadership, the net output is very similar imo.

Reactionary messaging is based entirely on a series of tropes:
-Ungrateful youth
-Nasty woman
-Scary minority
-Evil degenerate
-Uppity intellectual

Ideally the tropes can be combined.

This is why they are so obsessed with lying about college Gaza protests, it allows the right to push dirty hippie, scary minority, and ungrateful youth all at once on an issue that has little public traction (foreign policy).

Most ppl don't care about the policy either way, so the tropes are what they see.

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@bettybarcode Yeah I was thinking that. Basically they combine nonhetero and heretic as rebels against the divine order. So now it's "evil degenerate."

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@bradpatrick @kcarruthers I would think so. Talk radio definitely operates on that principle. Trump himself admitted this a few times in 2016 when he said that he would randomly spout the phrase "build the wall" as a way to wake up sleepy crowds.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think college graduations are a total waste of money and time. The real world doesn't GAF about if you took a long time to finish a project. The speeches are almost always forgettable pablum.

Save the students' money and cancel them all.

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@brinnbelyea I didn't go to mine. A high school one is OK with me, but you should be mature enough not to need one after college.

mattsheffield,

@dsmdexter With massive grade inflation, I really don't think that bachelor's degrees are that much of an accomplishment. I attended 7 colleges and didn't see substantial research or scholarship required in liberal arts, physical or computer science programs, except only at the 400 levels. It's far too remedial imo. Ditto for MBA programs.

A question for the community: Is it possible to use the Tramp feature to connect to a remote Emacs daemon? I ask because I have a file which I always have open on a remote pseudo-tty, but sometimes it would be nice to use my desktop Emacs with its nice proportional fonts and custom sizes to edit.

I want to connect to the same remote daemon so I can see unsaved changes and not have to worry about sync.

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@hajovonta @amszmidt I fear I may have to just use Tramp. But it's not the end of the world. It just is interesting to have run into a use case that Emacs maybe can't handle. Never had that before!
