Orcas continue to surprise scientists with their capabilities, including being able to rapidly kill and remove organs from great white sharks in less than 2 minutes https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/01/africa/orca-kills-great-white-shark-south-africa-scn/index.html

By now, you've likely seen the right-wing freakout over that video of women dancing at a gas station. It's completely stupid, but the controversy is actually more significant than you may think.

Fascinating numbers from this Pew Research study finding greater support for authoritarianism on the right.

Interesting in the U.S. that it is "centrists" who like dictatorship the most. Almost certainly, it's "centrists" like Elon Musk, aka post-libertarian reactionaries.

https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/02/28/who-likes-authoritarianism-and-how-do-they-want-to-change-their-government/

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@msbellows @mattsheffield Yes that's true everywhere except for the US, where our conservatives generally call themselves "centrist."

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@msbellows @mattsheffield You don't see that the US is the only country where the "centrists" disproportionately want authoritarianism?

I want to do a "Theory of Change" episode about nihilism, existentialism, Nietzsche, and how the intellectual collapse of Christian fundamentalism led to the moral collapse of Trumpism.

I'm looking for someone who's written extensively on existentialism but can relate it to today. Any nominations?

Don't miss the latest episode of the @discoverflux comedy news panel show "Doomscroll."

As per usual, we discussed all of the news, including the increasingly absurd cases against Hunter Biden.

This is a great examination of the moral epistemology of authoritarian Christians. They see the world completely differently than everyone else, both religiously and philosophically. https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/jacc.13530

Reactionary thought should be discussed in this way, not by inviting PR-focused advocates.

These people not only will lie about their actual beliefs, most of them don't even know their own intellectual history.

Alabama Republicans are pulling a ruse on voters with a poison pill Senate bill that claims to protect in vitro fertilization but which actually will automatically be repealed in 2025.

"Jazzhands McFeels," the driving force behind the most popular neo-Nazi podcast "Fash the Nation" has been revealed by #antifa researchers as Robert Warren Gasiewicz, a former Virginia-based Republican activist.

He made millions of dollars from internet Nazis sending him their meager incomes. https://accollective.noblogs.org/post/2024/02/28/jazzhands-revealed/

Mitch McConnell broke American politics. Whatever valedictory coverage he may receive in the coming days is totally undeserved. /end

🧵 Mitch McConnell deliberately nurtured extremism within the Republican Party while pretending he wasn't.

It was McConnell, not Trump, that converted the Republican party into one that subverted and attacked democracy. Trump merely does it louder.

McConnell = lawful evil
Trump = chaotic evil

McConnell's deliberate abuse of the Senate filibuster not only stymied popular progressive ideas, it also protected and enabled the growth of extreme Republicans in the Congress.

He protected them from electoral consequences for their unpopular policies.

McConnell blocked extremists like the "Freedom Caucus" from enacting laws, but he refused to actually oppose them or speak against them. https://flux.community/matthew-sheffield/2021/06/senate-filibuster-hasnt-just-stopped-liberal-legislation-its-also

McConnell figured out decades ago that the deliberate inaction favored by Republicans on any social need (pollution, safety, poverty, education, healthcare, etc.) couldn't be enacted by law, so he shifted reactionary policy making to the courts.

Judges could invalidate essential regulations and defund popular programs like student loan forgiveness.

Rather than moderate their views, Republicans became judicial activists. McConnell did this more than anyone else.

@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

Trump was the final piece of the puzzle. His flagrant extremism and violent rhetoric allowed McConnell to reframe his own radical viewpoints as "moderate."

McConnell has said some rude things about Trump and his crimes, but in terms of his actions, he has never done anything meaningful against Trump. They have always been allies.

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

This can be best seen when Trump was impeached for the Capitol Putsch. McConnell deliberately delayed the Senate trial until after Trump had left office. Which he then used as a justification to let Trump off--while pretending the courts would hold him accountable.

Educated Republicans like to pretend that they are better than Trump's vulgar criminality, but at the end of the day, they support it and him.

mattsheffield,
@mattsheffield@mastodon.social avatar

@luv_wins Within the Republican party, McConnell is a reviled figure. He betrayed his country for decades and basically everyone hates him. MAGA cultists absolutely despise him and certainly pro-democracy people do even more so.

After Alabama judicial extremists attacked in vitro fertilization, Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL.) is trying to pass a federal law that would protect IVF.

Senate Republicans have publicly claimed to support IVF but they are likely to block the bill from being voted on.

Please let the apolitical people in your life know if it is blocked tomorrow.

As expected, Republicans blocked Duckworth's bill.

Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss, who blocked unanimous consent on the bill earlier, did it once again.

She used the familiar fake Republican argument claiming it was an "overreach." Of course, they never said that when Trump or right wing state legislatures were overriding progressive cities. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/republican-senator-cindy-hyde-smith-blocks-bill-protecting-ivf-rcna141083

Legacy automotive manufacturers all thought they could be like Tesla—manufacturers of expensive luxury EVs. But that market is saturated.

The real money, and real environmental impact, is in EVs for the masses.

@obviousdwest It is incredible how many affordable EV designs are out there already from non-American manufacturers.

People want affordable EVs, but Detroit hasn't wanted to sell them.
