My thinking on what must happen to save democracy has evolved.

Fact: The United States has been a backsliding democracy for some time.

Fact: We are in an information disruption.

Because democracy requires facts and an educated population, the question is whether enough people will develop the media literacy needed in this new age of information quickly enough.

I am discouraged about what higher education can accomplish for at least 2 reasons 1. The increasing influence of the Right on the administration of colleges and universities 2. The increasing difficulty of teaching communication (including media literacy). The problem is, unlike, for example, teaching calculus, everybody thinks they already know how things work. I say this at the end of a long career teaching communication, culture, and technology.

Sleep didn't come easy last night. I finally just got up and went to the family room and kicked back in my magic chair. Sleep came to me after 03:00 A.M. True to his heart, Charlie left me alone until almost seven, "time to eat." But after feeding the dogs and putting on the coffee, I slept another hour, or so. Speaking of Charlie, he just came in to pester me about going outside again.

Sometimes I wonder, in all that tossing and turning, did I sleep a bit without knowing. Hmmm ... more coffee please.

    By April of 2023 I quit ever even checking on Twitter. I decided today to go back and officially delete my unused and useless account. I was surprised to find so many “sexy young women” (at least according their profile pictures) following me recently. But why? To build fake numbers? Anyway I can’t figure out how to shut the damn thing officially down! Anyone know how to do that now? #Twitter

    The most important context for understanding the "Open"AI melodrama is this:

    The founders launched it as mostly open tech in a not-for-profit enterprise. That structure was intended -- they said at the time -- to do good for humanity.

    They proceeded to pull a bait and switch that ranks as one of the most cynical money grabs in human history.

    Now, at least, all of the BS about ethics and honor are in the open -- basically the only thing about this company that is open.

    Money ruled. Period.

    The university I used to work for has declared "hate speech" constitutionally protected, which should therefore be permitted/supported comfortably even in the classroom. If a professor calls it out - maybe calls #haters "twits," the professor's speech is NOT protected. The prof is sanctioned, removed from the classroom. #hatespeech #doublestandards #freespeech

    The Banshees of Inisherin is the most gorgeous, moving, sad (very Irish) film I have seen in a long time. Everything is perfect. I have now watched it three times and will again. You can watch it and attend to different elements. Just the animals, for example; they "act" as icons/saints:/sacrifices/redeemers. And colors! And characters! Everything is perfect.

    Several threads in my mentions suggesting or implying that my posting about photography means I must be autistic.

    There's nothing wrong with or derogatory about autism, but using it as a casual label for people who are interested in things you aren't is both incredibly lazy and offensive in equal measure to autistics and everyone else.

    Having knowledge and interests isn't a diagnosable condition. If you want to insult me, do better.

    Sometimes I encounter videos on tiktock/tumblr: "wealth attractors" -reblog it & get good luck with $. At first I'm disgusted. Crass displays of wealth are ugly-- then I'm struck by how modest these dreams of 'wealth' really are.

    It's always like ... just a few thousand dollars ... never even close to the obscene sums that distort our world. "root canal money" not "buy a supreme court justice" money.

    I'm doing OK for now. But, I remember when $500 could have changed everything.
