Was reading Paul Thurrott's defense of Microsoft's Recall feature.

If there was ever an example of a journalist who has lost sight of his objectivity, this is it.

Goes on about how we all over-reacted, and how had nothing but good intentions, and that we should all just trust Microsoft to A) keep our data secure and B) to never upload the data from Recall onto their servers. Because we all *Know MS is very trustworthy.

Does someone know if collects data on (Windows Subsystem for Linux) usage or is it a safe space in the system?

Well, that's a step in the right direction!

Windows won’t take screenshots of everything you do after all — unless you opt in

Microsoft has announced it is making its controversial Recall feature, announced alongside its new Copilot+ PCs last month, something you will have to opt-in to use.

The feature, which will screenshot everything you do on your computer, is something privacy advocates and security experts have warned could be a “disaster” for cybersecurity. Microsoft had originally planned to turn Recall on by default, but now the company says users will need to “proactively choose to turn it on.” @theverge has more.

This is a friendly warning and reminder that if you had started looking on ways to move away from #Microsoft and/or #Adobe for their latest shenanigans, do NOT stop now. Make the effort to move away NOW if at all possible even if they pretend to have backtracked. Because WHEN (not IF, but WHEN) they'll pull the same shit again, it will be HARDER, not EASIER, to get out of their prison.

So, #Windows will not come with #Recall #spyware activated, just Recall spyware pre-installed.

What a relief. Not. 🙄

If I'd own a company which is still using #Microsoft, I'd have a migration path to #Linux worked out meanwhile.

Microsoft announced that it’s reopening a Windows Insider Beta Channel for PCs still running Windows 10, which will be used to test “new features and more improvements to Windows 10 as needed.” This comes despite the company’s intention to end support for the aging yet stubbornly popular operating system in October 2025. A few words about the new Microsoft Recall busting feature. People on Mastodon probably know about it already, but still — WTF? Just store everything in a local database that seems to be insecure even before release?

Well, that didn't take long...

There is now an automated tool for hackers to extract all data collected by windows recall.

#Windows' upcoming #Recall feature is enabled by default btw in the OOBE setup and CANNOT be disabled directly - you will need to disable it in the Settings app instead, afterwards.

I don't know if you'd trust #Microsoft to actually respect that setting either, wouldn't be the first and only setting on Windows that doesn't actually do anything you'd want it to (or not to) do.

OH and also - Microsoft stores all the Recall data in an #SQLite database in plaintext, so you KNOW it's secure and definitely not easy to steal away from you by anyone that gains physical or remote access to your device <3

I'm finally caught up on the Microsoft Recall feature coming to Windows 11, and my very first question is who even wants this?

Who has sat there and went "oh yeah, I forgot what I was doing 5 mins ago on my pc and I absolutely cannot spend a few mins thinking about it or pressing the back button to remember" ???

"Security Researcher Calls Windows 11 AI 'Recall' Screenshotting Feature a Disaster"

Take constant screen grabs of my screen and feed it into an AI? What could go wrong?

"With Recall, hackers are able to scrape "everything you've ever looked at within seconds," and users should prepare for "AI powered super breaches.""

Who could have predicted this idea would go south? Have to say, zero chance I'm bringing this tech into my setup.

Microsoft has patched bypasses for setting up Windows 11 without a Microsoft account. Previous methods like terminating a process or using a blocked email now loop back to account linking. Users can still bypass this via a command prompt trick.
