@geerlingguy you push out a ton of vids nowadays and I never miss any of them, on any of your channels. You getting the new studio has been a big blessing, either bcos it made it easier to produce more videos or it just became necessary in order for you to pay it off, or perhaps a bit of both. Either way, I'm happy!

It's insane thinking about how #iPhone has nailed touch scrolling right out of the bat from the first phone, and #Android phones still have not figured out how to do it right. Not just on touchscreens but on trackpads too, only #Apple has managed making something as "simple" as touch scrolling as intuitive, magical, and true to life (instant response, the exact amount of weight and inertia as you'd expect from what you just did with your finger) SYSTEM WIDE (and not app-dependent) while #Windows laptops still makes you feel like you're better off with a mouse. I use an Apple Magic Trackpad on my #Linux PC and it feels great and was one of the best investments I've made, but it will never be as good as it'd be on #macOS and that feels like a crime. Since no one has figured it out, I unjokingly wish the EU or CCP make it compulsory for Apple to teach everyone else in the industry how to implement this seemingly simple thing, so right.

I loveeee cats and I loveeee dogs but I feel like I'm only destined to have pet tortoises 🐢

irfan,

I hate finding out that people bred (and still do) dogs to live miserable, low quality lives for the purpose of making them look cute or exotic to human masters tho.

I'm not certain if it happens to cats too, I'd be surprised if it doesn't but I've certainly not heard of it much or at all. The only breeding with cats I've came across is a group of Thais trying to bring back a long lost/extinct breed of cats called Wilaat or Vilaat that were native to the Thailand of yore but as far as I can tell this is fine and safe, unlike the breeding of dogs to make them have extremely cramped internal organs or have short legs they could barely survive with.

I absolutely DON'T blame the people that adopt these dogs, I know some see this as encouraging breeders to continue their vile breeding of dogs BUT adopting these dogs, caring for them, and loving them is the LEAST you could do after these dogs were bred into existence in this human-infested world. I'm always super thankful seeing amazing pet owners because you KNOW their dogs live a life full of happiness because of them and they DESERVE nothing less 😭

Regardless tho I def cannot adopt cats or dogs knowing that they'll likely die before me, I don't think I can bear that. My tortoises are the same age as me and I'm certain they'll outlive me at this point. They're also a lot more affectionate than you think, maybe even more than cats lol and certainly more than fishes.

I took a photo of my mum's cousin at work. Turns out she runs Singapore's best rated wanton noodles shop! Very proud of her family for what they've built

@skinnylatte nothing beats Film photography but as someone who's never really grown up with it, it's too daunting for me to even think of getting into it... but the colours and whatnot all hit just right - kinda like CRTs when it comes to screens.

irfan, to AssassinsCreed

Pretty tempting to get for 37.80 MYR. As far as recent go, I didn't finish which isn't surprising cos I got distracted with many other games I have that I also haven't finished. , at first I played the male character and I thought meh I didn't like his accent lol and his character had too much testosterone (or what I describe as he's too ooga booga) so I gave it up - until long later I tried playing the female character instead and I loved her character better and the game itself was actually decent and fun so I almost completed it.

I was interested in the game before bcos a setting seems interesting to explore but bcos it's set in the UK, I think, I've to say the world/landscape itself seems pretty dull compared to something like Greece in Odyssey (again, not sure about Egypt in Origins since I've only played it like 10 mins).

TIL there's a "Gereja Ayam" (literally Chicken Church) in Indonesia that looks like it'd fit right into lol, maybe the theme park and feature a secret boss fight with the chicken head if you hit it just enough times.

The Singaporean government has joined the Malaysian government in using #AI generated (pictorial) content in their public materials instead of shelving out the money to get original content that they need (be it photos, illustrations, etc.).

irfan, to Youtube

I've been meaning to cut down my power usage without disrupting my lifestyle too much, the first thought is for me to "decommission" my HTPC which I keep running all day, asleep at best, just so it's ready for me when I want to sleep and need it to watch #YouTube (so I can get to sleep lol).

The "easiest" replacement is get an #ARM based computer to take over its job. My first thought it should run on #Linux just bcos I'm most familiar with it and it's an open ecosystem so I should be able to do a ton of things w it - but I only have a Pi 4 and that thing honestly sucks at streaming so nope. Tried #LineageOS on it to get it running #Android TV and while at first it seemed great, it ended up being quite a hassle and a mess so I ditched that.

Then my dad asked me to get an Android TV box/stick for his TV, and I got him the #Xiaomi Mi Box S (2nd gen). After I set it up and used it for a bit, I honestly kinda liked it. Tried #Plex, #Netflix, #PrimeVideo, etc. and they all ran great. The only downside I thought to this option is that I won't be able to watch YouTube with adblockers like I could with something like #Firefox on a desktop.

THEN I quickly discovered the existence of #SmartTube and GOD what a lifesaver it's been. It works just like the official YouTube client with all the pages and algos you're familiar with when you've authenticated, it blocks YouTube ads, but also it supports #SponsorBlock right out of the box without needing to self-host or wtv so it could even block sponsor segments in video if you want. Even has some nice accessibility options too like changing the subtitle colours, size, and positioning which is great for me who watches vids in bed w no audio.

This rant ended up being very long unnecessarily lol but all in all, that removed the only dealbreaker for me on getting and using said TV box for myself - so I did and have been using for abt a week now. The box turns itself and my TV off automatically after 30 mins of inactivity and I can easily turn the box and the TV back on using just my remote which is nice. Idek what'd I need the HTPC for anymore honestly since I already have a #SteamDeck to take over its job gaming wise much, much earlier.

irfan, to django

Hmm I've only ever built sites using , bcos I'm most good at and I'm just super familiar with all the features (and quirks) of Django and it's been great, but honestly being good at only Django (when it comes to web dev) does gimme huge impostor syndrome cos I know fuck all when people talk about and whatnot :(

Maybe I can learn how to build a site using so I too can speak gibberish lingo I never understood before with other fellow programmers?

RE: https://social.lol/users/bw/statuses/112414344202116592

irfan,

@skinnylatte The biggest "gibberish" to me is whenever people talk about Node/JS bcos almost every other projects I see people recommend online afterwards are just another Node or JS alternatives but faster and leaner and whatever and I GET FOMO bcos I never needed to use any of those for my work :(

11ty seems clean (no nonsense, which I love) but at the same time leaner that prolly would make me integrate these other "ingredients" to my project to make it complete/work.

irfan,

@skinnylatte ahhh sounds perfect then for me to get into and learn. Another I was previously considering to learn was Jekyll, which I guess is sort of like 11ty too?

but yea, I've been meaning to build up a simple personal site where I can post my documentations/blogs and somehow I refuse to build it in Django just bcos I'm too familiar with it at this point for it to not feel like a chore/work so learning and building it with 11ty sounds like a good first step.

Kinda bizarre learning that we have no official documentation of what race we really are? I know it's not on our NRIC but I thought it'd be on our birth certificate, but nope. I guess that means we literally all syok sendiri only thinking we're so and so race, but who's to say who/what are we really :neofox_woozy:

I was mad when I learned that Perlis (Malaysia's smallest state) is actually bigger than Singapore, because people often joked that Perlis could only fit 8 citizens and it broke my immersion knowing/recognising that Singapore isn't that small (hence, Perlis too) lmao.

RE: https://hachyderm.io/users/skinnylatte/statuses/112412019091798957

irfan,

@geraineon YES IM NOT THE ONLY ONE. Maybe it's bcos we've been brainwashed too much that Perlis is THAT small when in fact, no.

Perlis is 821 km^2, Singapore is 721.5 km^2.

irfan,

@geraineon I know!!! 😭 There's a possibility that out of that space, Singapore has higher number of actually livable space but yea that's besides the point. I lost all my humour to laugh at how small Perlis is after that realisation :'(

irfan, to random

might be the first German speaking TV series I've watched and I'm already picking up some German words (some of which stood out bcos I've sang them plenty of times through OSTs lol):

  • Schicksal: Fate
  • Aber: But
  • Ich bin: I am
  • Jahr: Year
  • Wer bist du: Who are you
  • Verspreche: Promise (hands down MY FAVOURITE bcos of how ridiculous it is to pronounce)
  • Was: What
  • Wann: When
  • Apparatus: Apparat

Also I've always assumed Herr and Frau were Male and Female teachers respectively, just bcos in my high school those who took Mandarin as their third language called their teachers, Laoshi (teacher) while those who studied Japanese called their teachers, Sensei (also teacher). I've always thought the others learning German calling their teachers Herr (Name) and Frau (Name) essentially meant teachers as well. Bcos of this show, I know it's not haha.

I feel like the only complaint I have of , is that I use text editors like Kate/ a lot for searching certain keywords - this is a common use case I'm sure.

On VS Code this is easy, on Kate it can/should be too... except the arrows to go to the next or earlier iteration keeps moving when it reaches the very first iteration or very last iteration. It's such a little thing but genuinely frustrating - only bcos it is a very common use case when you're using a text editor like it.
