#Windows' upcoming #Recall feature is enabled by default btw in the OOBE setup and CANNOT be disabled directly - you will need to disable it in the Settings app instead, afterwards.

I don't know if you'd trust #Microsoft to actually respect that setting either, wouldn't be the first and only setting on Windows that doesn't actually do anything you'd want it to (or not to) do.

OH and also - Microsoft stores all the Recall data in an #SQLite database in plaintext, so you KNOW it's secure and definitely not easy to steal away from you by anyone that gains physical or remote access to your device <3

Idk if this is a Nunjucks thing or an Eleventy thing but template blocks (like if blocks, for loop blocks etc.) leaving empty lines after rendering is driving me nuts since I'm used to how Helm's templating works instead which imo is a lot more intuitive/cleaner.

Bonkers how you can't 3 finger tap an item/link to open it in a new tab on like you could on (and , probably). forums I was looking into this on all starts with a simple, civilised question and quickly drags into a messy garbage of Apple extremists saying you're stupid for wanting that simple way of opening stuffs in a new tab when you can just either 1) Cmd + Click, 2) 2 finger tap + Open new tab, or 3) Get a mouse - as if those are the same things, when the answer should've been really, "you couldn't".

Read yesterday that Malaysia's the leading country globally in terms of e-wallet/cashless transaction adoption with over 63% of Malaysians using them over cash. This does not surprise me honestly since I myself have not used cash (in Malaysia) 99% of the time for years now, and have not used any of my cards (physically) 90% of the time since 2 years ago when #ApplePay was made available here.

Almost everyone around me too are the same, preferring any of the available #NFC payment methods like #GooglePay and #SamsungPay (which have been around for many years longer here than Apple Pay) when available, or fallback to #DuitNow (QR Pay) through any of the available #eWallet apps like #TNGeWallet or just about any of the first-party #bank apps like #MAE for #Maybank users or #CIMBClicks for #CIMB users.

Almost all shops from your local market and roadside stalls to restaurants or any stores in a shopping mall would at least support QR Pay should they not also have a bank card terminal (for NFC payments). Even my local laundromat and roadside car wash place accept QR Pay for a long while now, instead of how it was in the past constantly having to find change or stock some cash up in your wallet. This was my experience not just in KL/Klang Valley (the city), but also in other rural places throughout the peninsular.

Heck, should you need to, you don't even need your bank card to take out money from an ATM - you only need your phone to do that. My wallet's only filled with foreign money, otherwise I'd only have cash in my possession once~twice a year to give Angpow or Duit Raya. Some government/public facilities I've been to don't even accept cash anymore. I think people just hate having to withdraw cash so often or have change lying around. I suspect this thing is no different in most other #SEA countries, seeing the growing number of countries where Malaysia's DuitNow QR Pay is compatible with - its counterparts.

I still can't move on from how magical this is. I can only imagine how surreal it must've been to experience this live - esp if you're a fan of this song in the first place, which I've just learned that it's an ending from #SAO.

This whole thread about the Recall feature on Copilot PCs is making me anxious about future workplaces that may supply a Recall-capable laptop, and enforcing it/the policy to be enabled.

You should never install personal stuffs on a work PC for privacy reasons, but doesn't this take it to a whole nother level where you couldn't/shouldn't even i.e. reply to personal messages on it cos it's all recorded? 😮‍💨

But meh, fuck employers that'd force you to use a certain OS anyway.

@geerlingguy you push out a ton of vids nowadays and I never miss any of them, on any of your channels. You getting the new studio has been a big blessing, either bcos it made it easier to produce more videos or it just became necessary in order for you to pay it off, or perhaps a bit of both. Either way, I'm happy!

irfan, to iPhone

It's insane thinking about how #iPhone has nailed touch scrolling right out of the bat from the first phone, and #Android phones still have not figured out how to do it right. Not just on touchscreens but on trackpads too, only #Apple has managed making something as "simple" as touch scrolling as intuitive, magical, and true to life (instant response, the exact amount of weight and inertia as you'd expect from what you just did with your finger) SYSTEM WIDE (and not app-dependent) while #Windows laptops still makes you feel like you're better off with a mouse. I use an Apple Magic Trackpad on my #Linux PC and it feels great and was one of the best investments I've made, but it will never be as good as it'd be on #macOS and that feels like a crime. Since no one has figured it out, I unjokingly wish the EU or CCP make it compulsory for Apple to teach everyone else in the industry how to implement this seemingly simple thing, so right.

irfan, to AssassinsCreed

Pretty tempting to get #ACValhalla for 37.80 MYR. As far as recent #AssassinsCreed #games go, I didn't finish #ACOrigins which isn't surprising cos I got distracted with many other games I have that I also haven't finished. #ACOdyssey, at first I played the male character and I thought meh I didn't like his accent lol and his character had too much testosterone (or what I describe as he's too ooga booga) so I gave it up - until long later I tried playing the female character instead and I loved her character better and the game itself was actually decent and fun so I almost completed it.

I was interested in the game before bcos a #Vikings setting seems interesting to explore but bcos it's set in the UK, I think, I've to say the world/landscape itself seems pretty dull compared to something like Greece in Odyssey (again, not sure about Egypt in Origins since I've only played it like 10 mins).

TIL there's a "Gereja Ayam" (literally Chicken Church) in Indonesia that looks like it'd fit right into #NierAutomata lol, maybe the theme park and feature a secret boss fight with the chicken head if you hit it just enough times.

The Singaporean government has joined the Malaysian government in using #AI generated (pictorial) content in their public materials instead of shelving out the money to get original content that they need (be it photos, illustrations, etc.).

Hmm I've only ever built sites using , bcos I'm most good at and I'm just super familiar with all the features (and quirks) of Django and it's been great, but honestly being good at only Django (when it comes to web dev) does gimme huge impostor syndrome cos I know fuck all when people talk about and whatnot :(

Maybe I can learn how to build a site using so I too can speak gibberish lingo I never understood before with other fellow programmers?

Kinda bizarre learning that we have no official documentation of what race we really are? I know it's not on our NRIC but I thought it'd be on our birth certificate, but nope. I guess that means we literally all syok sendiri only thinking we're so and so race, but who's to say who/what are we really :neofox_woozy:

I was mad when I learned that Perlis (Malaysia's smallest state) is actually bigger than Singapore, because people often joked that Perlis could only fit 8 citizens and it broke my immersion knowing/recognising that Singapore isn't that small (hence, Perlis too) lmao.

#Dark might be the first German speaking TV series I've watched and I'm already picking up some German words (some of which stood out bcos I've sang them plenty of times through #AOT OSTs lol):

  • Schicksal: Fate
  • Aber: But
  • Ich bin: I am
  • Jahr: Year
  • Wer bist du: Who are you
  • Verspreche: Promise (hands down MY FAVOURITE bcos of how ridiculous it is to pronounce)
  • Was: What
  • Wann: When
  • Apparatus: Apparat

Also I've always assumed Herr and Frau were Male and Female teachers respectively, just bcos in my high school those who took Mandarin as their third language called their teachers, Laoshi (teacher) while those who studied Japanese called their teachers, Sensei (also teacher). I've always thought the others learning German calling their teachers Herr (Name) and Frau (Name) essentially meant teachers as well. Bcos of this show, I know it's not haha.

Apparently a lot of people (esp Japanese?) are upset at this new Pro ad from a couple of days ago. I guess I can see why though, a bit like throwing thousands' worth of food away just for content?

This is wonderful news but seeing the list of patrons, why does #Valve not join the sponsorship programme though? - I know (or I think at least) that they often/occasionally sponsor #KDE (as an org, or devs) to do some work for them, and I'm not denying that they contribute a lot through funds/code to #FOSS/#Linux, but seeing that the #SteamDeck comes shipped with #KDEPlasma (which I still think is a really smart decision) and since Plasma is a huge part of the Steam Deck (literally half of the software exp), it'd be great to see Valve commit to a recurring sponsorship programme to the KDE folks.

They certainly have the money for it, surely. I hope this will be true someday.

irfan, to gaming

I remember seeing my brothers' #gaming PCs just stopped getting upgraded, including their GPUs. My eldest brother's PC stopped "growing" with an #NVIDIA #GTX ~500 (or 700) series. My second brother's PC stopped at an NVIDIA GTX 1070.

Mine was upgraded several times from a GTX 1050 Ti, to GTX 1070 Ti, to an #RTX 2070 Super, and lastly to an RTX 3080 Ti ~2 years ago using money I got from a job I did funded by the EU lol (otherwise... I would never have gotten an XX80 series honestly).

Seeing my brothers' PCs and the sad state they're in, I swore I'd not "grow old" and stop upgrading my PC hardware every couple of years. Now, I fully understand them not because of the rising commitments of them having families of their own etc. but just... this is enough lol and I suspect it will be enough for ~6-10 years at least. No offense, but my younger self would think I sound boomer as hell rn saying what I just said.

Life as a consumer in Malaysia is easy: see "Produk Melayu" or "Produk Buatan Muslim" and the like -> don't fucking buy.

Otherwise if it has no stupid mentions of race or religion, and if it's a good or safe product for you (i.e. for consumption) then please buy all you want. If it's a local product, I say that's better.

irfan, to random

This only happens right after I'd be back from said country to even benefit from it.

After I went back from my work trip to Singapore ~last year, QR payment between Malaysia-SG suddenly became compatible. Afterwards I went back from Bali for vacation, QR payment between Malaysia-Indonesia became compatible.

This time I'm set to head to Osaka by the end of this year, Japan's QR payment is set to be compatible with Malaysia's QR payment and other countries the following year in 2025.

The force in this (cashless) chosen one is strong.

irfan, to fediverse

Moderation in #Fediverse currently works this way (as far as I can tell):

  • Instances could enforce their instance block and mute list. This gets passed down to all members of their instance.

  • Users could have their own block and mute list of users or instances. This only applies for them, on top of the home instance's list.

This works great for the most part, but previously there have been plenty of discussions/arguments of instance members perhaps not agreeing to certain blocks/mutes enforced by instance maintainers - in cases such as this, since individual members have no power to "override" these rules for their account (i.e. to federate with users of another instance that's been blocked by their instance maintainer), their only choice as the last resort is for them to move to another instance.

I imagine it'd be great if it works this way instead:

  • Instances could enforce their instance block and mute list. This gets passed down to all members of their instance by default.

  • Users could have their own block and mute list of users or instances. This only applies for them, on top of the home instance's list.

  • However users could also override the home instance's list granularly, if they would want to for example, federate with an instance that's been blocked by their home instance.

As someone who's not really delved into the workings of the Fediverse/#ActivityPub or any of the projects using it all too much, this "feature" suggestion might totally be technically nonsensical or maybe expensive though for it to make sense or be possible to achieve. Just thought this might be an improvement for what I think is already an excellent moderation system that we have here.
